I have had my car a week and filled it just to see real milage .. I put 9.6 gal in at 370miles which gave me 38.8 on my calulator. The screen told me avg MPG is 43.3.. Now I have reset screen and now it says I am getting 53 MPG with about 27 miles since fill up !.. Is this true ? Am i dreaming or doing something wrong?

Nope, you're not doing anything wrong. What you're currently seeing is a real-time cummulative readout of your MPGs as measured against 27 miles driven. As you drive and accummulate miles, the MPG will vary right up to your next fill-up. Enjoy your new car!!

Well, it's quite possible that the tank wasn't *completely* filled up (see any of the threads relating to the internal bladder in the gas tank) - if you take the 370miles/43.3mpg, that's 8.55 gallons. It's quite possible that you only used 8.55 gallons (or more or less than 9.6), but still filled 9.6 gallons, giving you an 'incorrect' calculated mpg.

However, all is not lost. Continue yourself to calculate mileage the 'simple' way, and track it along with tracking the computer mpg each time you fill up. My first tank 'calculated' was off from the screen MPG by 4+ miles, while now after 20 tanks it's less than 2MPG off cumulatively.

    Hope this helps!

WOW! I was just hoping to get a snapshot of Bay Area MPGs, but this is even better. I'm really impressed with the numbers that are being posted all across the country (actually across the world!). Thanks for taking the time to share...

410 miles, 60.2 mpg...mostly highway driven at published speed limits with and without air conditioning. Drive it like you have an egg in your shoe! Tires inflated to 43/41lbs, mobil 1 since 300 miles.

59.5--mileage only shows about 35 so it's a little bit of a cheat. I accidently reset my mileage yesterday while cleaning the MFD screen--dumb, huh. Anyway, I only had about 30 miles on the tank when I reset and the mileage was about 57.4 at that time.

That's REALLY pushing your luck, Ray, by my math. Assuming a maximum 11.5 gallons usable (probably high estimate) and assuming your mileage computer is accurate (mine tends to give higher estimates than reality the highe mileage I get) then you will be able to go 610 miles before the tank is completely exhausted.

It's your funeral, but that's cutting things darn close in my book...why risk damage to the hybrid system by cutting it so close? Geez, if you're really only getting 52.1mpg you won't make it to 600. Likewise, if you don't really have a full 11.5 gallons you won't make it even if you're really getting 53.1.

    Hi Evan
Not to worry. Been here several times. My tank holds 12 gallons with these warm temperatures and my computer does an excellent job with the mileage calculations. I've checked it on every tank and it's always very close and under as often as over due to fillup variance. After 8000 miles, I'm comfortable with how the car works. 12x53=636. I'll fill up on my way into town at about 600. I could have stopped on the way home in the rain. I ran it out of gas once and put in 12.4 gallons and no damage that I can tell. I haven't gotten less than 50 mpg since and that low number was straight highway cruising at 75. The car is fine as far as I can tell. I haven't read about anyone experiencing the warned of damage to the hybrid system from running out of fuel, have you? I guess I'm living on the edge, but I like putting 600 miles on a tank of gas. I wonder about people who report only being able to put in 8 or 9 gallons. That's just so different from what I see. Thanks for the concern and all your great posts that I've been enjoying for months now.
    Ray

Like I said, it's your baby, and I don't mean to tell you how to live. I wouldn't, personally, push that far. But no, I haven't heard of any actual damage to the hybrid system from just running out of gas...I think it's part myth and part concern about deeply discharging the Traction Batt.

If you'll tolerate a few more somewhat critical comments, read on, if not then this will just be for the archives and so that others don't try to reproduce your style.

1)12 gallons is clearly more than the stated capacity of the '04. This means you're filling an essentially empty tank and the neck and you're probably having some spill over into the charcoal canister that captures overflow. Filling into the neck that far risks spill out, evaporative emissions, and potentially worse (fire being the biggest).

2)you seem to be very luck to have the tank capacity that you do. I'm a guy that has gotten 9.8 gallons in, once. Second highest is 9.5. And that's going 60 miles after the last bar started flashing getting about 57-58mpg on the display. And I was nervous at that.

3)It sounds like you have lots of gas stations nearby you that make stopping to fill easy...I have several areas where I drive that there are 3-5 miles b/w gas stations, the electric mode just won't get me that far if I have the bad luck to run out that far from help.
