Replaced Turn Signals, Fog Lights, High Beams, Parking Lights & Rear License Plate Bulbs

    There are TWO possible Remedies, install a Flasher Unit designed for LED bulbs, and install in line resistor necessary because the power requirements of a Light Emitting Diode is only a tiny fraction of what a filament bulb, like Halogen, required. I only installed LEDS on Non Flashing bulbs, like Reverse Lights, Fog Lamps, License plate lights etc. That way you avoid the situation. I have NOT seen any Prius Specific LED resistor or flasher information anywhere and decided I would wait until someone else forded that stream ahead of me before trying.

    A 4.7k 1/4w resistor in parallel with the LED should make the factory flasher work fine.

    32koolors: I'm intersted in changing out the interior lights in my 2010 with LED's and came upon this thread. It looks like you did a lot of research. Can you detail what types of bulbs you used in each location and where you ordered them?

    Stock door puddle, front interior dome and license plate bulbs replaced with Super Bright 12-SMD T10 168 194 LED Bulbs | LED License Plate Lights

    Rear interior dome replaced with Super Bright LED Panel Lights For Any Car Interior Dome Lights

    I haven't bothered with interior map, vanity or cargo as I don't care about them.

    Is there danger of this load value overheating with prolonged sits at the red light?

    The reason I ask is I had to add a 7.5 ohm load equalizer to my front blinkers on my motorcycle to get them to blink right, but they warn to not run too long.
    There was also several leds being serviced at once.

    P=Esquared/R
    P=(14*14)/4700
    P=.042w

    A 1/4w resistor is the same as a .25w resistor and we are dissipating .042w so we are OK to use a 4.7k (4700) ohm resistor in parallel with the LED light assembly.

    In your bike's case using a 7.5 ohm load, that would be 26.13w dissipated so that would take a pretty big aluminum cased with fins resistor to handle that. Lets figure what current that is. I=E/R or 1.87a so not too bad to deal with. Wonder why the resistor value is so low?

    Don't know, that's what is recommended, maybe because so many leds are involved.

    An alternative to using load resistors (which waste power and cause heat) is to use a flasher that is designed to handle LED signal bulbs. There's cheap ones on the market, and there's also one (google "tapturn flasher") that fits Prius... and adds convenience "tap" signaling as well, and other things.
