doubtful. the head unit in a toyota prius acts as a master to all the slave devices, like the cd players, and all things AV LAN. a better idea would be to keep the factory radio, and to keep it running, but add another radio on top of that, i think that is what people are doing

i am reasonably sure you need to keep the radio.

on prius cars equipped with navigation, the navigation, takes over the role of master

When I said "factory unit", I actually meant the CD player, and not the MFD... I think I saw somewhere the factory CD is double din, but I have no idea how the wiring would work out..

I replaced the factory head unit with a double-din kenwood with nav etc. No problem. You may need a resistor on some wire to keep the MFD happy, the pros already know which one.

Did you REPLACE the MFD, or KEEP it happy??
If the first, how's it working with Climate, Trip and other native screens that it can NOT take out of AC or Engine ECU?

It's just some plastic to attach a 2-din device in place of the original radio. No word on replacing the MFD.

So... blah blah blah dear misslexi.

i'm about to install a kenwood DDX419 in place of the factory single disc player; looks like i must use the metra axxess kit and the 68ohm resistor to keep everything working correctly: A/C, MFD, steering wheel buttons? ideally i don't want to have to rip it all apart more than once to get it working. i got the scosche harnesses already, is there anything else i must have? thanks for any responses.

no jbl in the '04. the '05 has the jbl, and if it had an aux port, it would be just fine by me. but the wife has the '05, she don't care about the aux. i need a usb port, cause i'm done w/ having 8 cases of cd's flopping around in my back seat. and the base head unit sounds like a transistor radio. real POS. even if you replace all the crummy stock speakers, the head unit can't drive any decent speakers. my ears are so damaged i can't listen at high volume any more, but i would like it to sound clean.

I installed some focals ps165 in the front going to do the back and install a 4 channel because your right radio does not serve them justice.

and you had the JBL. the base radio is a joke. the base speakers are an even bigger joke. i put some Dayton Audio 7" woofers in the rear doors, you can hear they want to put out some low frequencies, but the stock head unit can't push them.
i will get a component set for the front after i get the head unit installed.

This can be done! Just got mine back. It's a snug fit, but worth the congestion to have the same appradio I had in my civic hybrid. It took a while to find someone willing to take on the project but I'm thrilled with the results.

Posted from my mobile... not sure why one posted sideways - here it is again, right side up:

Audio controls do not function (same as single din aftermarket upgrade) and will always display as "audio off"
$80 for the steering wheel control adapter
    ac still functions

and, the "before" shot with a single din:
