I wonder if anyone's ever done a study on this? Here's my very rough estimate based on limited internet research:
    - Let's say one of these car carrier vessels carries 4000 prii.
    - These boats are big. And heavy. And thirsty. They consume about 150 gallons per mile. And they don't exactly burn high-octane. They use "bunker fuel" - some of the dirtiest, most polluting stuff on the planet.
    - Let's say the voyage from Japan to the west coast is 5000 miles:

    150 * 5000 / 4000 = 187.5 gallons per car.

So let's say you choose a Prius at 50mpg, instead of some locally manufactured car which gets 30mpg. It's going to take you almost 14,000 miles of driving just for your fuel savings to equal the amount of fuel it took to transport your Prius overseas.

Of course, for New England cars, you can probably double these numbers because ot the extended voyage to Florida. And this doesn't include the fuel consumed to manufacture the car.

Longo Toyota in El Monte claims to be the largest dealership in the world. Hope they get a lot of G3's this June.

Let's not forget the train and/or tractor-trailer rides from port to destination.

The OP hasnt even logged on since 2/23. Seems unusual for someone claiming to be interested in being first. Heck, I log in at least 20 times every day to stay up with the latest information. ;)

So the original owner has the vehicle for 5 years then sells it to someone else. The car will likely still be around when the odometer is reading 200,000 or even 300,000 miles, how is the carbon balance sheet looking now?

Just because a car might be manufactured locally doesn't mean its parts and raw materials are local as well.

Take a look at National Geographic Channel - Human Footprint - Our Driving Imprint and the accompanying video at
that focused on a Ford Crown Vic. (I rented the NGC Human Footprint documentary on DVD awhile ago myself.)

And each part is flown in on its own private jet.

Could I say this is why I buy used cars? My cars just come from the last user.

For everyone (including me) who will not be "THE FIRST!" person to receive his or her 2010 Prius, look at the bright side; Op's and other's Prius' will have depreciated by the time yours and mine arrive! Heck, some of them will probably already have been crashed (not wishing that upon anyone)...lol

Re: To late. I got my deposit for 2010 Prius 8 month ago.

I wish I would have made a smaller deposit, the request I made was for a package IV with the solar roof in Silver but now the stealership is trying to push off package III since they have three coming in this month, GRAY is the color for all three... :rockon:I don't think so!!!:frusty:

I don't mind the wait, after all I am the one making a sizable purchase and I plan on getting what I want - I will not settle for anything less! I have purchased quite a few cars and can Honestly say when I bought my 2007 Honda Ridgeline it was with ease and pleasure, the purchase through a Toyota dealership has been so much pain and wouldn't you know none of the dealerships are helping one another, WOW what great TEAM WORK, there is no "I" in Team ...:decision:

wait for your first choice. its simply too much money and too much time (you will most likely be driving it for a long time) to settle for anything less.
