    3) Financial reasons.
Owning property together is much easier to do if legally you're married, banks have to consider the combined income.

Why shouldn't they be allowed to suffer the same indignities and divorce the way heterosexual couples do?

*Because love and compassion and respect and monogamy don't have anything to do with whether one's partner has indoor or outdoor plumbing.

*Because the basis for lifelong and enduring love between two people isn't primarily about having heterosexual sex.

*Because procreation isn't the only --or even primary-- reason for a society to encourage the creation of stable family units.

*Because it doesn't have to be called "marriage" (if that makes Christians feel better)...but it MUST provide *exactly* the same rights (regarding legal and taxation issues, etc). We're all equal citizens, we all pay our taxes, or are supposed to...

...isn't it odd that, for me (as a bisexual) I could choose to partner with a man and be treated by the federal government in one way, or partner with a woman and be treated in another?

My love is the same for either person; it's all driven by the same wants, needs, and desires. Why, then, should our government handle the legality of the union between me and that other person in two different ways, depending only on the sex of the other person?

I'm 44 and don't plan on having children, so procreation doesn't have anything to do with it.

    ----

I feel like maybe you may have already come to your own conclusions. Why do you ask?

    Ahh a good question, Pinto..

I mearly wanted to throw it out, into the lions pit as an alternative to all the negative press it has gotten.

Im letting others add their 2 cents, of what their personal feelings are on the subject and reasons why its a good thing... ;)

*Hospital visitation for a sick "life partner". (as well as decision making for comatose patients.)
    *Estate taxes.
    *Spousal medical insurance.
*A HUGE boon to the wedding industries including all the stores they are registerd at, florists, reception halls, bakeries, and the makers of those neat little ice sculptures.

Because all Americans are guaranteed a right to the "pursuit of happiness" by our Constitution. If marriage makes someone happy (and does not impact anyone outside of the union), they should have the right.

PS: I'm happily marrying my partner of 5 years in a couple weeks. :D :D :D We're having a full on traditional ceremony here in San Francisco. Unfortunately we have to go to Canada afterwards to get a "real" marriage certificate.

Hey, Atom, too bad you missed the pride parade last week. ;)

Not that I saw it either, but it sounds like something that would make you happy.

    10. Married life is filled with surprises.
    9. Married life is filled with decisions made by two people that can benefit both.
    8. Married life is filled with sad times.
    7. Married life is filled with happy times. Both should be shared.
    6. Married life is something everyone who wants to, should get a chance at.
    5. Married life is not something that everyone should participate in, but no one should be denied.
    4. Married life is filled with anticipation.
    3. Married life is filled with dread. Again, both should be shared.
    2. Married life is not just something one should jump into. But being gay should have nothing to do deter you from it.
    1. Married life is exciting.

If gays get married, they might bring the marriage success rate up a few points. :)

gays have the right to be as miserable as any hetro couple.

Gay marriage will lend credibility to marriage, since a gay couple in love has faced many more obstacles than most heteros, their marriage will be stronger and last longer.

Love is a non-gendered emotion. Do you parents love your kids of the opposite gender any more than your kids of the same gender?
