    Is this failure common?

Relays, overall, aren't prone to failure.

No there not. Haven't replaced a relay in any of my cars in 20+ years.

I thought the same way all of you did, when I had my first vehicle towed in 45 years of driving.

I've always been milk a car back home, even with a failing fuel pump and a blown head gasket from as far as 200 miles away. Most of my driving career has been 25k-35k a year, through deserts, high mountain passes and snowstorms.

It was the fuel pump relay that went out for my vehicle to be towed.

I found a used one of the relays on eBay for $14 delivered. So, I got it just for the reason I say.
