I am experiencing this whirring/grinding noise:

Which is the same as this thread:
Grinding Noise from Dash | PriusChat

It occurs intermittently when starting up the car, though if I then turn the car off (as in my video) the noise continues.

On that thread the vehicle was in warranty and was fixed by replacing the MFD touchscreen. My 2006 UK Prius is (I believe) out of warranty, and the touchscreen/MFD seems to be working fine. Is there anything I can do preventatively on this?

    Thanks!

the screens can be repaired inexpensively by aftermarket electronics, or you could swap with a salvage unit.

the odd thing is, i didn't think there were any moving parts in the mfd, are you sure it's not the brake accumulator?

Yes - it's odd as it's definitely a mechanical sound, which doesn't tally up with the "no mechanical parts in MFD" statement!

Hopefully others may be able to shed light on exactly what the noise is, and if it's a case of just waiting for the whole thing to pack up before attempting a replacement!

I have the same issue, can anyone help? It does not sound like th brake accumulator it sounds like a small electric fan motor gone bad and is direct behind the mfd. There is no noise under the hood and independent of the HVAC system and engine being turned off. It is definitely electrical as it stops once the door is opened.

could be a hvac vent door moving continuously

or, you may need a new mfd as above
