And you missed Jimbo's point, which was to install a good used battery pack, not a failed battery pack. The point is that the number of wrecked Prius with good battery packs is much larger than the number of failed battery packs. This means there is a surplus of good used battery packs available at bargain prices.

Is it really that simple? I suspected that one would have to test each cell individually.

Testing each cell would be the most accurate method, but testing the pack as a whole will give you a pretty good idea. Any bad cell will bring down the total voltage: a bad cell will never exceed its nominal voltage, but will usually read lower than nominal. If the whole pack reads at nominal, then things are promising.

What you can't tell is the health and balance of the cells. As with anything bought at salvage, you either get a good warranty or take your chances.

I was just told today by a dealer in Bakersfield, Ca that I needed a new battery.
I had not really seen any bad symptoms, but suddenly the hybrid warning
    lite went on.

Price the dealer quoted was $3600.00. I did not go for a new one. The car
    seems to run fine.

    Are you over 150k miles?
In CA, I believe hybrid battery is warranted for 10 years or 150,000 miles.

    1. Are you the original owner of this car?

    2. If so (or if not) do you know if this car was purchased in California?

I just posted my HV Traction battery failure and replacement on another thread for our 2007 with 57,000 miles on it. Wow, 1 in 40,000? where does that data come from? I guess I should play the lottery...maybe win a thousand or so with my recent "luck" of being 1 in 40,000.
