Netbook or iPad in Prius

Mine will never fit; it's the 64GB model.

The iPhone is still limited to one app at a time. With an xp or linux box you can have a software radio, gps, OBDCII app and many other things running at the same time

 

iPhone OS 4.0, which is coming out this summer, will be able to run more than one app at a time. BTW, the iPad isn't a closed platform. All the apps are written by third party, not by Apple. The only thing Apple does is make sure the apps are not buggy and doesn't render a customer's iPhone/iPad unusable. Quality control.

 

This will officially change in the next version of the iPhone OS.

 

Why wait

 

I think judgeless is running out of ammo to shoot down the iPad/iPhone.

 

It is very tempting to play with gadgets in the Prius. But I totaled my Gen2 Prius while messing with my iPhone video. Totaled another car and I'm lucky I didn't kill the woman and two girls. You people need to take distracted driving very seriously. It is not worth it. Keep your eyes on the road. Just ignore the gadgets if necessary, and remember to concentrate on job number one. It is extremely serious.

 

i have an ipad car charger, but i dont use it while listening to music on the ipad because as soon as i plug the power, it creates noise which is kinda anoying. havent found a way to get rid of the noise....

 

oh i dont have a 2010, im just saying i got one of those chargers they were talking about and get noise from them

but then again ive gotten the same noise when i charge ipod in a different car too so.. i do not know

I can speak somewhat on this topic. The iPad WILL charge using the AUX port in the center console of the Prius, but there's a catch. The power coming off that port is 500ma, the same as a standard USB port on your computer. The charger that comes with an iPad puts out 2a, or about 4 times as much power. The iPad will charge off a 500ma source, but only with the screen off and it will take a very, very long time to charge. I find my iPad will charge about 50% in full 8 hours, or so. If you're looking for that 2 hour charge time time that you get with the factory charger, be on the look out for a 12v car adapter that's capable of putting out 5v @ 2a. Otherwise, pick up a DC transformer to plug the factory charger into. As posted elsewhere on this board, you can fine some here: http://www.griffintechnology.com/device_types/ipad

Personally, I find the AUX port sufficient on long drives to other cities. It will maintain a charge for screen-less Pandora streaming. (Duly noted where AT&T service works along highways, else, it's my Sprint phone that provides the tunes...)

The AUX port also doesn't create any noise from what I can tell. The Bluetooth connection is pretty clean, and sounds very nice.

Now, another interesting point is that the NAV system, which has iPod capabilities utilizing the USB port are not compatible with the iPad. The NAV system doesn't seem able to load the file system as it otherwise would be on an iPod. Furthermore, the iPad complains that your car is not compatible.

But there is a resolution to this problem. Albeit, a bit more limited. All iPads come standard with Bluetooth, and it will sync nicely with the Prius as a multimedia device. Plug in your aux port, fire up Pandora, turn the screen off, and hit the road. (Or tossing it in the back for the kids to play with while they watch their favorite iTunes shows on the long road trips, etc)

As for storage, not sure if it will fit in the top glove box, I'm wagering not. It'll fit in the lower one, but you can also easily store it under a seat as well. It should be noted that the iPad doesn't like operational temperatures over a rather low temperature (90 degrees or so?) so if you intend to store your iPad, then I would expect a far shorter life...

It should be noted that I am strictly referring to the plugging in of the AUX port in the center console, not the $300 ipod plug they sell separately as a connectivity kit. I have no experience with that set up.

I like my iPad very much, especially with the new OS that allows me to organize apps in folders. Running only one app or internet session at a time is probably the biggest drawback. Nevertheless, I can't remember the last time I fired up my laptop. If only I could get my iPad away from my granddaughter........

Just drive the damn car... that in itself is hard enough.

 

I find that my iPad fits nicely in the gap between the shifter and the middle arm rest. (OK, you can't shift the lever down at that point... it's a tight fit.) Just as an iPhone fits very nicely in the opened front cup holder, with the bottom of the phone on top of the front of the holder and the top of the phone resting against the flipped-up cover.

Coincidence? Probably.
