    Thanks for posting the dyno sheets. :)

    I'm curious about the difference between the power mode and normal mode curves you spoke about. Theoretically there should be no difference in the hp/tq curve. :confused:

    The Prius "transmission" would make things a bit confusing when trying to compare dyno runs to other standard or manual tranny equipped cars since you can't just stick it in 3rd (autos) or 4th (manuals) for the run.

    Ok, so Prius' drivetrain has 15% loss at the wheels. 114 out of 134 hp.

    How about for BMW?

    They said manual transmission loss is about 15%. Some of the truck goes up to 30% loss!

    There you have it. HSD eCVT drivetrain loss is on par with the manual transmission at the wheels.

    In the LSx and Mustang world we usually use the same figures of approx. 15% loss for manual trans, 20% for auto and 25%-40% for the beefy auto transmission/4wd systems on trucks.

    Something has me scratching my head about this data:

    Use the blue line that starts at 25 mph. The slope should be how fast the power comes on from the ICE. So taking 134-98 = 36 hp which nicely matches the starting power. But look at how slow the ICE power comes on:

    Why does it take so long to reach peak power? MG1 has little inertial resistance and it and the ICE should 'spin-up' to 5,200 rpm (or the peak power rpm) instantly. Does the engine actually over-rev above the peak power point?

    Is it possible to get time-stamps for each data point, especially from the first run?

    I understand the reason for the fixed gear accelerations starting from a minimum rpm. What I'm trying to understand is how long it takes to reach 100 hp.

    Keep in mind that comparisons to non-CTV transmissions will be difficult because most dyno runs are started at 3,000rpm or high especially in the case of automatics with very high rpm torque converters. The Prius is kind of doing it's own thing which is not directly related to an auto or manual trans being started from idle and ran through the gears. I think the most helpful way to analyze this would be observing RPM during the run.

    Here are a few graphs of naturally aspirated truck (friend's) then a turbocharged GM truck's (mine) dyno sheets for comparison. I tossed a Prius dyno sheet in that shows RPM as well.

    Bob, my experience has been that performance dyno operators often aren't very interested in low speed power so power is often applied slowly initially with little effort to be consistent.

    Exactly! Throttle is usually applied slowly at first then when a desired RPM is achieved they floor it.

    The ICE is constrained by the MG1 RPM limit
    http://eahart.com/prius/psd/ (I suspect this is the 2001 to 2004 drive train, the details will vary for other Prius drive trains, but not the concept. Later Prius allow a higher limit to MG1 RPMs, but there IS a limit)
    If you play with this, no matter how you try, at 0 MPH the ICE can't go over 1800 RPM, no where near it's power peak.
    At 10 MPH, the ICE can't go over 2300 RPM.
    At 20 MPH, the ICE can't go over 2600 RPM.
    At 30 MPH, the ICE can't go over 3100 RPM.
    At 40 MPH, the ICE can't go over 3500 RPM.
    At 50 MPH, the ICE can't go over 3900 RPM.
    At 60 MPH, the ICE can't go over 4400 RPM.
    At 63 MPH, the ICE can get to the 4500 RPM Power Peak.

    So as you wonder why the power peak does not level out until over 50 MPH, realize that it is constrained to lower RPMs.
    (The NHW11 makes peak power at 4500, the NHW20 makes peak power at 5000 RPM, and the ZVW30 makes peak power at 5200 RPM)

    Thanks for posting that Jimbo. I knew that was the case but didn't have the numbers handy.

    The reason engine rpm is restricted at low rpm is that the MG units couldn't handle the resulting re-circulating torque if the engine were allowed to run faster at lower road speeds.

    If you go through the planetary gear calculations to find out what the loads would be required at the MGs with fill ICE rpm and power at very low speeds, like 0, 5 10 mph, you will be amazed.

    That simulator is for Gen1 Prius.

    Gen2 MG1 limit is 10,000 RPM so ICE can go up to around 2,800 RPM. Gen2 Prius' ICE reaches peak power around 50 MPH.

    I have seen more "other makes", "other types of cars" snobs on PC chat than other forums I have been on or other car groups I have participated in. Fortunately it's even a small minority here.

    Fascinating subject.
    F10 535i x-drive with M package is wife's car/our road car. I traded my M3 for a 2011 STi. Now I have the '13 v five and my latest '08 STi makes 400WHP and only sees the road racing track. I am very pleased with the handling of the stock Prius.

    Forgot to mention that the wife almost forced me buy the Prius. It is to offset the carbon footprint I am leaving with the race car... I enjoy everything about the car except for acceleration.

    Interesting points.

    ethanol definitely causes loss to power, I would think is less of an octane issue unless the engine is detecting a knock. Typically if the ICE detects a knock (ping), it will retard to timing to make less power = less heat to prevent more engine pre-detonation were you able to see an ignition timing change from different gas using the Scangauge?

    Interesting information on the transaxle, something now I definitely want Toyota to change on my first oil change.

    My brand new 2013 toe was off too.
