Does the second Gen have adjustable valves, shim-on-bucket style? They will drift. They are more stable than screw-and-locknut type (Honda for one), but...

Shim style is likely left to pros, I believe they are difficult to check/change for DIY'r. Probably expensive though, due to the difficulty.

Off-topic: is 3rd gen hydraulic, self-adjusting? I believe someone here said that. Also, I might have read that in the repair manual, but the damn thing is so terse it's hard to tell for sure.

Classic and 2G valves use buckets of variable thickness to provide the correct valve clearance. You are right that it is not easy to adjust because you have to remove the camshafts and substitute the correct size bucket.

3G uses hydraulic lash adjusters. My reference is the 2010 New Car Features Manual, 2ZR-FXE Engine Mechanical: Engine Unit: Details (2010 Prius), seventh page of that section.

It isn't overly difficult to check the clearances though. Supposed to do at 60k I think. Not many do this check I would bet. Once checked and a set of values is obtained, it can be decided if the difficult bucket replacement is necessary. From the measurements it should be possible to select a bucket length that falls into the range. IF everything is clean and goes back the same.

From my limited experiences with Toyota buckets, they stay in adjustment a long long time, pretty much for the life of the engine.

I count myself among the few who did that check, on my 2001. Several valves were slightly loose when I did the check at 60K miles. However I decided it wasn't worth the effort to remove the camshafts so I put everything back together.

    Just an update,
No solution just yet but i had my car in with my local Toyota dealer,
It was indeed misfiring slightly on No 1 Cylinder, they swapped plugs and coils between 1 + 2,it still misfired on No 1,so they reckon it's down to the injector in No 1,so they're going to take it in and swap injector 1 and 2 around and see if the misfire moves to No 2 cylinder,so we'll see what next Wednesday brings?

The mechanic said it would take about an hour, hopefully it'll yield some results.....and we'll take it from there.

I'm wondering what is the cost of an injector vs. the labor cost associated with swapping injectors around, and then having to remove the fuel rail yet another time to actually replace the failed part. Depending upon the relative costs involved it may be cheaper just to replace the injector and see what happens.

    That's true Patrick,
As i've said in other previous post,i get along well with the lads in the service dept and we discussed that very point but the head mechanic [Paddy] who does most of the work on my car said that if we go ahead and change the injector and the problem persists i'd be down the labour costs [?] and the cost of the injector which will cost me €190 shipped which i'll get from Northern Ireland,Toyota Ireland cost for the injector is....wait for it!....€223 + 13.5% VAT,you guys in the States don't know how lucky you are with regards to the cost of parts,i actually enquired with Carson Toyota about buying all my service parts and they're cheap but when you calculate shipping plus when it gets to Ireland you're hit with Excise Duty and VAT it just spirals.

Well the injectors were swapped around and indeed the misfire moved to No 2 cylinder,so new injector and hopefully good for another 345,000km!!
