Well it only took 2 pages of posts before we got someone who doesn't have a problem with this law.

 

This is not true at all for modern car engines. They are quite quiet. I have had acquantances, in a playfull manner, dally in front of my car in a parking lot while I was driving. And they said that was sure quiet, then, I tell them the engine was running, as it does during the stage 1 warmup, and they very confused then.

Ever hear something like a Fit or the other other smaller cars now common in a suburban main street cruising along at the speed limit. I have seen them, but I have not heard them. They are too quiet, and the SUV tire noise overcomes the small car tire noise.

 

Exactly. If it were about pedestrian safety, it would apply to all quiet vehicles, and there'd be studies attached that prove quiet vehicles are more dangerous.

And why do car makers suddenly care about pedestrians? Everybody knows people only walk because they're too poor to afford bus fare, let alone a car.

 

Pretty broad statement. Also, walking is the ultimate form of saving energy, making EV's look like energy hogs.

 

Sorry, that rolling-eyes-smiley needed a more sarcastic cousin. I do a fair bit of walking myself - we're on the same side here.

All existing motor vehicles? Not just new ones? Does the definition of 'motor vehicle' for the purpose of this minimum-noise-bylaw include mopeds, motorcycles, and electric bicycles?

 

Why road vehicles? Surely an electric vehicle operating in a pedestrian environment would be more of a risk? I'm thinking golf carts or electric vehicles in airports.

 

All the airport buggies I've seen have big flashing lights and loud horns. That seems to work - a steady minimum noise doesn't seem necessary.

 

You have my vote. I would be very happy if my Prius sounded like that!

 

This is a knee jerk, reactionary, ill-thought-out law in my opinion. The fact is, very few people are blind and in need of a noise-maker. The vast majority of people are fully capable of seeing a vehicle that poses a threat to them navigating a roadway. So the simple and polite solution for everyone involved-- assuming there's even a need for such a law-- is that we require a short-range transmitter in quiet vehicles that activates a small, relatively quiet alert device in a blind person's cane, or wrist watch, or pendant etc. that gets louder the closer the vehicle is to them. Problem solved for everyone, and at very little expense, and almost zero annoyance to anyone. The only problem I see with this solution is that regulators and politicians lack the simple intuition and rational thought to come up with or approve such an idea.

 

And pedestrians would associate that noise with a danger from cars, not UFO landings, as some noises I have heard.
