Mobil1 0W20 Oil analysis reports

    The fuel residual is up, but the TBN is still quite good. You can try increasing the interval in 2,000-3,000 increments until you start seeing a dip in TBN and/or an increase in wear metals

    Must be because the numbers are pretty close since the first oil change.

    Just got my analysis today. This is the Third oil change using my Hymotion battery. I ran for 10k miles this time. Estimated time on engine ~3k miles. The rest was all electric. :D

    I'm guessing that my high fuel content is because I really never let the engine get hot enough to burn out the gas. I dont think I have a fuel system problem. I'll have to figure out a way to get the engine hot once a week or so to get that fuel out of the oil. I'm going back to 5k miles this next oil change.

    To those that are running extended EV mode with their plug in you may want to make sure to get the engine hot for a while so you have less fuel in the oil.

    Well I did mention in my first oil analysis when I converted my car that I converted it to a PHEV. Also for the last three reports I listed an estimated engine run time on the total miles on oil since I do a lot of EV driving.

    I own a 04 with 70K miles. Does anyone see any issues with changing to synthetic oil at this time? Brand?

    Some owners saw increased oil consumption after switching to synthetic at high mileage. You have to weigh that risk against the potential benefit (if any). If I were you I won't bother. Just my 2 cents.

    Not many choices out there for 0w20. Mobil 1, Valvoline, Castrol, Honda, Toyota, AMSOil, Redline. None are cheap, but you ought to have a longer oil change interval as long as you don't have a consumption problem (not common).

    I asked that same question awhile back in the thread listed below and the consensus was the benefits would be negligible at best and the problems could be considerable.

    I am due for an oil change. Do we have a "sticky" on recommended synthetic oil types for Gen-II? I am still using 5W-30 Mobil-1. I see the 0W-20 is longer lasting oil (now used in new Prii). But I have use up my 5W-30 supply anyway. 0W-20 has winter MPG benefit (+? MPG) but in hot summer may be concern? I have 97K miles on an 2006.

    0W-20 isn't a longer lasting oil, Toyota give the change interval distances on the GenIII to encourage you to use 0W-20. They have to because the used 0W-20 for their gumnt fuel economy tests.

    How long an oil lasts is much more a function of the oil's quality than it's viscosity.

    Odds are there is no problem using 0W-20 in a Gen II during the summer, but you are wise to be suspicious until you have solid evidence that it's OK.

    OK XS, I am going with 0w-30 advanced fuel economy Mobil-1. Pretty sure that is suggested as valid replacement for Prius Gen II.
    That should be good compromise.
