PiP pure-electric range ?

When mine is fully charged, it says 12 miles. But because of regenerative braking and when touching the "gas" pedal lightly, I think I am probably getting about 14 miles I'll be interested to see what others are seeing.

i'm not sure i'm understanding you correctly freedom, do you think the pips are all going to get the same ev range no matter how they are driven and under differing conditions?

 

I'm sure the Prius computer adjusts to your driving and will increase or decrease your EV miles available based on your history. I'll let you know in 3 or 4 weeks when I get mine. I don't believe the value is fixed.

 

When the car is fully charged, it gives you an estimate based on some calculation. But that number is probably only useful to you if you drive on a flat road, non-stop, at moderate speed until you ran out of electricity. Like SimiPrius, said, it doesn't factor in any regeneration opportunities.

The image you posted above was from the morning of my first commute to work. The engine started that morning for heat, but I made it to work (13.3 miles) with 1.1 mile of EV range remaining (IIRC). My mpg for the trip was 763 (reflecting the tiny amount of gas I used when the engine started for heat). I drove all the way to work yesterday on pure EV and I had 0.6 miles of EV remaining.

If you drive in hilly areas or roads with higher speeds (50mph, for example) and very little regen opportunities, it will affect your EV range.

I wish we could dump data from the PIP to a Thumbdrive and load it into a Program to display the data we're all looking to compare.

 

Also, a BIG factor is the temperature the vehicle is at when you look at the "range" meter. If your car is outside, the battery is colder and as we all know temperature affects lithium battery capacity. If you garage your car, it will be warmer and likely show more initial range, that probably accounts for the different initial range numbers you are seeing. Once the car is underway, the pack will be warmed by the cabin air, but that will take quite a while to show up, meanwhile the battery is "discharging".

Note: If you want to argue about this point, please remember, the lithium battery is NOT an electrical device, it is a chemical storage device, and temperature is a major factor in its ability to hold/store charge.

Yes, I wish it were easier to collect data. Maybe something like a laptop with a data logger.. Anyone suggest anything like that? I dont have an Android phone (well, I do but it's ancient, the Tmobile G1)..

My car also show 13.3 also on a full charge.

 

The most that I have shown is 12.0, and most of the time it is about 11.5 after a full charge. Should I be concerned that my batteries are not fully charging. Since I live in SoCal where temperatures are moderate, I would think I should see more that 11.5. Thoughts anyone?

 

I really think the Prius ECU learns your driving habit. before my plugin conversion, my distance to empty was always 589 miles. after conversion, the DTE would raise after each fill up. The highest DTE I got was 915 miles. As you exceed the range on the display, the Prius will update with new range that matches your actual range.

 

It all depends on how you drive and what are the conditions. Gasoline cars have far more variation in actual MPG than that.

Even if it does, it will still be an estimate, which will not be accurate unless driving style and conditions are constant.

My Tesla gives me TWO range estimates: One estimate of "ideal" range (assuming gentle driving at, I presume, 55 mph) and another estimate assuming I drive exactly as I have been driving the last 20 or 30 miles (I forget which). I can achieve the ideal range if I choose to drive that way, or even beat it if I drive slower. But with 245 miles of ideal range, I never need to.
