Hello Fellow Prius Owners. I am an old owner new to this wonderful website full of great info. I have a 2010 Prius III model. I had bought it brand new in Jan 2011 and I use it daily for getting to work. I drive alot so it already has a good 44K miles on it now. I was thinking of doing couple of mods on my beautiful car. This is my first car so i want to keep it simple yet somewhat stylish. I was thinking to put a auto dimming rearview mirror. One question? do we have auto dimming sideview mirror for prius?? Also, I was thinking to upgrade my wheels to 17" but that would decrease my fuel efficieny. I am not interested in looks, i want good traction and handling and i live in a very cold climate so maybe a all season tires would be great (any recommendations)?? Also, is there a good suspension system and exhaust system for Prius?? (Brakes as far as i know are used in Prius to help with charging of the battery also right). Any advice would be appreciated and once again Hi five to all you earthlings because green is the way to go....

    Welcome aboard crusty. :)

Don't want to mess with the exhaust system as it is very special to the Prius (heat recovery).

There are some easy suspension mods that will surely help handling. Like the center and front braces.

Many harsh climate folks use a spare set of tires/wheels. In Kalispell, we run a set of studs (from 'Big-O' tires) on cheezy steel wheels. Once the roads get better we switch back to the OEM's. This is the best way to get the most out of each, and the swap out time goes pretty quick. Your avator doesn't show where you are, so it's hard to say how harsh your winters are - which limits the reliability of the advice.
As for auto dim side view's ? Forget it. None for Prius, but I did see it done . . . it was a set made for the Gen I RX Lexus SUV . . . :

Anyway, the fit & finish, once installed on the Prius? It was really 'if-ie' and they're WAY over priced, imo.
    btw ~
    Welcome !

I am in North NJ... So the weather is not that bad but during snow, condition worsens... I will be moving to fargo due to work committments during this winter and will be back during summer so i doubt whether my stock tires would give me a good grip on snow since fargo is worst during winters...
Also, how to improve the suspension??

Yeah, Spiderman, I hear you. I wouldn't mess with the exhaust system either. Forget about the so called "power chip" of any reprogramming of the car's control systems.

You also don't want to place anything in front of the passenger compartment that changes the "crush" characteristics of the occupant protection system.

Like Spiderman said, the front and mid-chassis braces are a good inexpensive addition to improve the handling "feel" of the car. I'd go with sway bar upgrades, too, but that would make the ride rougher. With high pressure tires, in my opinion, the car ride rough enough, already.

I'd check out the last page of this thread, in which I elaborated on suspension upgrades and "ride feel.".

Thanks for the replies... My first mods will be as follows...
    1) tanabe Strut tower bar
    2) Tanabe sustec under brace
    3) Tanabe sustec stabilizer bar
This is what i was able to find for my car based on the tanabe website suggestion. Is this overkill for solidity and balance or do i need to look into other products..
Question. Why is a rear sway bar used? Do i need one even though i am planning to get the above parts. Do i need to look into other manufacturers? If so, can anyone list a few names whose balancing and rigidity products can make my car more solid and handle netter

I actually purchased, installed and examined severl of the Tanabe and Cusco accessories, expecting them to be the best available.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed and made simpler and improved components for my own car and others who were interested on Priuschat.

The shocks and springs, as well as the sway bars are fine. I would trust Toyota Race Development (TRD) more.

I see little, if any, improvement from the tedious to install "strut tower braces." At the very least, they make servicing in the engine compartment more difficult. At worse, in an accident, they may unintentionally change the crush characteristics of the crumple zones in the occupant protection system.

That's from being a trained observer in mechanical structures and as an engineer.

Are you moving to Fargo, ND? That is where I live and yes the conditions are worse here in the winter time, but all I ever use for tires is michelin radial x from SAMs club. You don't need a really true set of winter tires, yes they will always help but just driving slower and more cautiously will get you through winter.

    Rude person's....
I hear you... i will drop my mod of the Tanabe "Strut Tower Braces" because in terms of all these mechanical stuff, i am a novice... its not my field of expertise.. i would take your advice on this and drop that idea... I will go ahead with the Sway bar...

I am interested in the part you made... how can i purchase that... also, can i DIY that or do i need any expert to install that...

    @Kory,

Yes i will be moving down to fargo in mid september all thru jan/mid feb. maybe we can catch up there sometime....
I usually dont drive rough (Self Proclaimed Safe Driver).. so i think i should be fine... I have already driven my car thru 3 winter storms in last years rough winter in the Northeast.... it was OK but i am not sure if Fargo is same or maybe a bit harsh...

This Prius mid-brace is one of my best and most successfu custom made one at a time products.

For Sale - Custom "Lightweight"torsion flex box beam GenIII "v" mid chassis brace w/10.9 J.I.S. bolts | PriusChat

It is rally nice looking and "tricked out." There are very very few out there. The last 6 persons who got it found the install to be effortless. It can be installed without jacking up the car. You need a ratchet with just a 14mm socket. A torque wrench is rcemmended, but from my45 years plus on working on cars, a quarter turn after the bolt is run in puts you in the "ballpark" of the correct torque.

This is the brace that I use on my own car, and the photo in the avitar on your upper left.

PM me, if you are interested.
