I just received my new plug-in prius. Haven't even named it (willing to listen to suggestions).

How does one frame the conversation at work regarding charging and etiquette/cost sharing?

    Thanks,

    Tony

Right, I'll ask him. In the meantime, what about the rest of you? Here is what I received back from the VP of Facilities:

The Center is in the process of master planning for both the building and the outside property/parking lots. We plan on tearing down the barn at some point (hopefully in the next year), so we can’t commit to setting up a parking area for electric cars at this time. I will put your e-mail into my master planning folder for future reference as planning progresses.

    Subject: Electric vehicle parking

I know this is coming from Left field, but we have 3 staff with hybrid cars and being one of those, I'm looking to move forward with a plug-in hybrid myself in the next 2-3 months. My poor Prius has 181,000 miles on it. I've talked to GH and other maintenance guys about outlet options and the barn by the parking lot already has weather protected outlets (at least one does, the other needs to have its plastic clear cover fixed). If it's okay with you, I'd like to plug mine in when I get to work, but I have a couple questions...

    1. The electric cost may range depending on how much I need to charge. I plan on the 4.4kW battery to be depleted by the time I arrive. At $0.10 per kWh, that would be $0.44 per day that I work.
    2. If others decide to go that way too, each 120W outlet requires its own fuse because it draws up to 15 amps.
    3. I would recommend that the spaces be specially marked for "plug-in cars only" to minimize cord stretching (25 feet long) in other spots.
    4. Maybe a survey to the staff would help determine future needs and administration should come up with outlet-use rules and regulations.

I wrote up estimates of annual electrical costs by vehicle model, and recommended that employees who want daily charging should donate that amount to the Company's favorite charity, a local food bank.

I also told then that 8 120V outlets is better and cheaper than two EVSE's.

    antonyhsu,

Where do you work in Ithaca? I'm in Rochester.
If you're looking for a Policy, check with Cornell or Ithaca College. Both should have policies in place by now.

At cornell it is OK to plugin. There is at least one level-2 charger employees can use.

You live here in Ithaca huh? What color is your PIP? What is your average mpg? These hills are really rough on the ev range.
