You want to keep heat out of the engine bay as that's the air that gets sucked into the intake when the car is sitting idly... wrapping the intake would do nothing to solve this. Ceramic-coating / wrapping your exhaust header would give you bigger gains than just coating the intake.

For best performance, one wants to push as much air through the engine as possible. Dense, cold air does the job better that sparse hot air. Take a look under any high-performance car and you'll see just that: a cold air intake.

Here's some good reading on the topic: ISUPAGE; Performance Intake System Basics

Fuel heating is just as much snake oil as the MAF swap. The EPA has tested several fuel heaters and found zero economy gains: "Gas-Saving" Products

Not to insult you, maybe you have been conditioned to accept false info as real info

But fuel heating isnt snake oil. In terms of going for mpg with an added effect of gained hp "if it's done right"

I was more thinking of doing a thermal wrap/ceramic coating on the intake tubing AND wrapping the exhaust header. Keeping the heat down from the exhaust while also trying to keep the air cooler as its been sucked up into the engine for a cooler location from down in the front fender area...now that i've removed the lil noise reduction white plastic box.

Not sure if it would net me +/- anything, but i'm willing to give it a shot once I get some time to fab this thing up.

So you're saying the devices tested by the EPA did not "do it right"?

I'm having a hard time taking these mods seriously. The pics you've posted show a basic misunderstanding of fluid dynamics... a crushed drier hose is going to be horrible for airflow.

If we pretend this is a performance thread, not an intake thread, then I am not off topic. <G>

Has anyone swapped the final drive from a Prius v into their Gen 3 liftback?

The liftback has a final drive of 3.27:1, the v uses 3.70:1. If, as it seems it is just three gears after the HSD but before the wheels, this should be 'easy' (No more room needed under the hood, no modification of the electronics, no hassles with CARB)

This should make the car quicker to about 60 and slower after say 85. (It will also lower gas mileage, but this is a performance thread)

(I would be more inclined to swap the other way and make my v a dog accelerating but more fuel efficient while cruising)

AS far as the intake heat reduction just bypass the throttle body coolant loop. Only needed in cold area's. I did mine 5 years ago. Removes 100F off the TB and intake. Main reason I did mine is take the 190F heat off the very expensive TB motor. And wrapping the exhaust is not a bad idea but very labor intensive as its hard to reach. And besides the intake does not use under hood air doesn't it suck it from the bottom?

Jimbo's right. Changing out the final is the best bang for the buck if your looking for mpg gain or going taller and looking for off the line around town performance.

i wouldn't wrap the exhaust unless: i lived in an arid location, or the exhaust is high quality stainless steel or very thick cast. what happens is the wrap will trap moisture and cause the exhaust to rust out. i know this cause i had to wrap some hooker super comp headers because the idiots designed them so that the right header was upside the oil pan. i didn't want to heat my oil up, so i had to beat a dent into the header tube and wrap it. w/in 2 years it was swiss cheese.
the intake does take air from the rh corner of the engine compartment. i would guess toyota felt it would help to heat the engine up a little quicker? it does seem logical that getting your intake air from under the rh headlight would give you cooler denser air. jury is still out on whether this helps in any manner. i hope to meet up w/ dave at some point to find out.

will have to look for a 2"-3" coupler.. and some tubing. :)

Ceramic coating avoids this problem altogether.

Btw, it does not matter how much air you deliver to the throttle body throat your still limited by TB throat size.

so no matter what piping i run prior to the TB, if the TB opening is 51mm/2"...then running 2.5" or larger piping won't matter? Could too large of piping hurt? 3"?

No sir it will not matter. A classic performance upgrade for modern cars is a bigger TB that can utilize a CAI. Of course that requires a software tune also to optimize air-fuel map.

ya, that and I don't know of any electronic TB's that are Prius G2 swappable.

Anyway, so...just need to start collecting the tubing. :)

Let's put it this way... you can't carry 10 gallons of sh*t in a five gallon hat.

Bust out your dremel and get to shaving. If there's no aftermarket TB, you make your own!

Yes i understand where your coming from :).. But yes I'm working on something that will be EPA approved.

I can say right now there is more than Meets the eye..
