ICE in EV Mode ... Again

    My question was "how does warming up the engine get heat to the battery" and I think the answer is it doesn't. Warming up the engine gives you the option of warming up the cabin. If the cabin is warm then the battery can get heat via the fans.

    There's two points:
    ●The temperature of the hybrid system is low: The vehicle has been left in temperatures lower than about 32°F (0°C) for a long period of time etc.
    ●The outside temperature is low (less than 14°F [-10°C])
    Both of these apply to John and ny_rob. Neither of them apply to you, I thought, because we discovered the excess regen issue. But if putting it into neutral every time doesn't do it for you, then perhaps you're hitting the first case, where car has been out below 32 for too long.
    Btw, re: how does engine running heat the batteries, it doesn't. But it's the same way as in hot climates, running the fans to exchange heat with the cabin technically doesn't do much either. I think the assumption made by the engineers is that at such low temperatures, you'll stop torturing yourself and just turn on the damn heater :p

    they don't know us very well, do they?;) yes, that's not my problem. i think it's the excess regen and possibly a mph kicker. it hasn't been cold enough yet to test anything and when it has been below 32, the ice hasn't come on, although, i store it in warmer temp. i'm just curious as to what john is experiencing.

  8. OK,I think I have it. Charged to 11,started out in HV, turned on heat and defrost as needed, car automatically either blends both or I revert to EV when I see that the instant mpg is not 100. Did not look at the to portion, but it was better than the from, still had 3 miles. Coming back, I used the same procedure, charged first, started in HV. got home with about .1 mil of EV. Left. Trip mileage was 105 mpg for 15 miles. Terrain: rolling hills, Traffic: was half freeway and half suburbia. The overall average also increased by 1 mpg. Observed Speed Limits.Temp. In low 40 s. So don't get paranoid about using heat, defrost or EV. One can still get great mileage in the Winter. That is ( California Winters ).

  11. I am saying that I did not care what mode I was in, as long as the instant mpg shows 100 mpg. Initially after the engine warms up.You can technically be in HV, but also Eco and EV and engine is running, but still getting 100 + mpg.after a short period the car goes totally in green "EV". Even if I'm running in EV and the terrain is right, I will go into HV to save EV for when I need it. Very often at this stage the engine does not come on anyway.when do you need EV? When going uphill, so the instant mpg indicator shows 100+. Comprende ?

    gotcha, this is not about ice in ev mode, it's about using pip in the most efficient way as john is always saying.;)

  13. Correct, forget the ICE, the defroster, the fans, use all as needed. Just keep your left eye on the I MPG Indictor......................(Instant).

    I believe (at least for the G1 Prius) that if the battery got too hot the A/C is forced on...not true anymore?

    I had a Gen1 and I had the A/C come on once. But I can't recall if the G2+ also do this.
