It comes from "X-Horses" and the second one I bought had firmware 2.0.4 which works with my wife's car:
    MINI VCI FOR TOYOTA TIS

There may be other vendors but this one worked for me. Still it took nearly 10 days to arrive . . . negotiate.

Also, I am using "Windows XP", a virtual PC, that keeps it isolated from my laptop. I am not a fan of Windows in any form but there have some reports that more recent versions of Windows might have trouble. I don't know about any other versions.

Definitely Volume 1 because it and a Prius-aware scanner are your roadmap to what is broken. Volume 2 because it has specific instructions on major repairs. Avoid any "CD" as they are notorious for being poorly digitized versions of the manuals.

Now some folks have had good luck using the Toyota online TIS service and there are daily and monthly rates. I have not tried it as 'an old man', I likes my paper books. But after diagnosis, you might find TIS to be more cost effective or reasonable alternative to Volume 2 for specific repair procedures.

ok i am bidding on 2 books,2001 toyota prius volume 1 and volume 2, on ebay. its like 96 bucks for both but i made an offer(hope its the right one for 2002 and 2003 also). eventually im going to buy it either way. and as for the mini vci, i have windows vista 64 bit, would this mini vci work or would it not work at all? i really like the idea of using my laptop since im really good on computers. and it is really cheaper. i want to know if it will be compatible with my windows before i even buy one. and also, isthe 2002 toyota prius 16 pin or 22 pin connector?

I don't know. You might try some Google searches. I've only used Windows XP.

It is 16 pin. You can see it where your Autozone scanner connects.

More expensive but supported, you might look at AutoEnginuity. The developer can answer any questions but it is pricy, $500 for the basic package and the Toyota option. I've used it with both Prius without a problem and you can get it fairly quickly.

The other option is to look over the ScanGaugeII. Check the XGAUGE definitions as I remember there are the INFO / subcodes. At $150 and the pig-tail or Prius specific cable, you'll also be good to go. Not as sophisticated as AutoEnginuity and miniVCI, it can also be used while driving.

These are the folks I bought miniVCI that worked:
    X-Horses Authorized Online Store
They claim to be the "X-Horses" online store and their version came with firmware 2.0.4 that worked with my wife's car.

You've got the right idea, a virtual machine that runs as a program under the native operating system. So 'Windows XP' is in effect a program running under the native operating system. This is how I run windows on a Macintosh but I can also run Linux or other operating systems under the Macintosh OS. I know there are similar "Virtual Machine" systems available designed so multiple, independent Windows systems can run on the same machine.

    Sounds like a good plan.

Virtual machines have been around for a long, long time, the 1970s, and have a lot of value. What they do is provide an additional, independent memory management system. The 'virualized' operating system can preserve and maintain legacy applications. Meanwhile, the virtual system keeps the different operating systems from 'stepping' on each other.

In theory (and practice) you could even run DOS and DOS applications <grins>

I think you are well on the way. Especially once you get a Prius-aware scanner running. We'll be able to use the INFO codes you post, check in our copies of the diagnostic manual and point you to where the problem lies.

Just to recap, your car now runs for minutes, hours, long as there is gas? The inverter pump and loop have coolant in it? The traction battery shows it is charging?

These are all good things for the next phase, figuring out the last little bits.

This is the one I got that works with firmware version 2.0.4:
MINI VCI FOR TOYOTA TIS Techstream V7.31.003 single cable

This is the one boppo got that works with firmware version 2.0.4:
Newest 2013 MINI VCI FOR TOYOTA TIS Techstream 2012.V8.00.034single cable free shippin

The key appears to be the 'firmware' of the miniVCI cable:
    • 1.4.7 - works on NHW11 (our models) but only partially on my wife's ZVW30
    • 2.0.4 - works on both models, NHW11 and ZVW30
User 'boppo' and I both report working versions of the hacked Techstream. However, his supplier reports a higher version and mine reports techstream 7.20.037.

The cable should come with a disk with the drivers and Techstream on it.

Yes, 2.0.4 firmware works on both of our Prius.

    As a 'virtual pc'?

Windows XP is so full of bugs and is a favorite target for virus writers.
