I have a 2004 Gen II Prius with 175K miles. Last May 2012, I replaced the Hybrid battery pack for $3700.

Since April 2013, I noticed a intermittent noise, similar to the coolant pump, but sounding as though coming from the driver's side of the engine compartment. It starts as soon as I open the driver's side door (even without starting the car) and continues, while driving also, until about 5 minutes after the Prius is turned off.

My local Toyota service center says it's the ABS actuator that needs to be replaced at a cost of $3000. Right now, the car is showing NO codes or lights. Could this be anything else? I think it may be a relay that's faulty or software that need's updated.

    Looking for any ideas.... Thanks.

I would see about getting a used part. Since that's a lot of money to spend on a 9/10 year old car.

Right. And I might start dating Calista Flockhart. That's the ABS actuator for another $3000-$5000.

    Two ideas:

    1) Do you have any driveability issues at this point? If not, and since no skid control ECU warning lights are on [such as ABS, VSC or ((!))] then why worry?

    2) If the problem gets to the point where one or more of these warning lights come on or if your brake system is impaired, then buy a used part from a salvage yard, as previously suggested.

I think it is likely that the brake pressure accumulator within the actuator assembly is leaking pressure, hence the need for the brake pump to run more than in the past.
