Trying to use 10mm box-end wrench and ran into trouble freezing the pulley from turning. Also, first time messing w/ belt and pulley...working alone in a parking lot w/ no back-up. Didn't seem worth it...I could have been there all day and still not had it out.

    1) Did you notice my post which describes how to change the engine coolant pump and shows a photo of me using a flat-blade screwdriver to hold the pump pulley stationary?
    2) Yes, if you don't have the proper facilities and tools to support your efforts, this work can be difficult.
    3) A 10 mm box-end wrench should not slip on the pulley nuts. If it did, you need to obtain better-quality tools.

I'm hoping the dealer won't charge you more to remove the rounded off bolt heads

Nope but they wanted to sell me a new belt for $35. I'll be doing that one myself.

Yeah I didn't want to risk snapping one of those pulley machine screws off. That...would've sucked.

The belt will cost you around $15, so it might be worth while to let them take care of everything for $20 more. It'll have a warranty.

Or you may suggest to them you buy the belt at the parts counter and hand it to them. The mechanic has to remove and reinstall the belt either way. There really shouldn't be an upcharge for this belt replacement.

Too bad I didn't link to the post I wrote in Jun 13 regarding water pump replacement before you started, Rich.

Snapping the pulley bolts wouldn't have been a big deal since you would have been replacing the water pump anyway. Snapping the bolts to the block would have been a huge PITA if a shank snapped at the block surface.

As long as you get your water pump replaced, it's all that really matters. It won't cost you that much more.

I'd recommend anyone trying this at home to use a 10mm socket instead of fumbling with a box wrench, be prepared to deal with the idle pulley nut tightness (cheater bar) and find some way to reliably secure the pulley from turning.
