:)My early 1980 VW Rabbit diesel would emit a lot of black exhaust under hard acceleration. Our 1999 & 2006 VW NewBeetle diesels didn't. Many of the later diesel pickups are loud and obnoxious.

Most recent diesel pickups are so quiet from the factory that you would be hard pressed to tell they were diesel by just listening. It's the aftermarket exhausts and programmers making them scream like banshees.

Absolutely. But because people have always mixed petrol into diesel they carry on doing so, despite the manual saying not to. Such is life.

They blame everything other than design in an effort to avoid warranty costs. Bosch (they supply most of the diesel injection systems on the road today, including all the 3/4 and 1 ton pickup market) seems to be having issues with their new pumps and the Ford 6.7L also had similar problems to the VW with the pump randomly going south and sending metal throughout the fuel system. More than likely it was a high sensitivity to water contamination not gasoline causing the issue though.

This is true stock, most of the sound and smoke come when the converter/DPF are removed and poor programming gets installed. My truck is fully programmed and there is no smoke at all even when putting down over 500HP on my race tune.
