HOW TO DIY: JDM Folding Mirrors with Signals

Don't all models after a certain year have the same number of airbags? Regardless, it's still best to tap the "blue" wire in the left "A" pillar. I have a 2012 PIP Advance, couldn't fully remove the plastic trim piece. Frustrated, I spent hours unsuccessfully trying to find the blue wire under the dash. With determination, I was able to tap the blue wire in the "A" pillar.

The trim problem lies in a short squarish black "tendon" for lack of a better name that IMHO is meant to secure the A Pillar cover from flying off at speed as the side air bag deploys. I found a way to take the A Pillar cover off by gently rotating the flexible middle of the "tendon" 90 degrees with a super-long needle-nosed pair of pliers. Then the head of the "tendon" popped right out of its cover slot. Ditto for reassembly. But that trick by itself took at least 30 minutes to figure out. In addition, there is less space inside the A Pillar to find the blue wire because of the folded-up air bag. Then of course the air bag itself is a fun item to work around, not knowing where the sensors are and anticipating a fast deployment around your fingers at any bump :-(

Here are the pix. Unfortunately most of the night ones came out badly because the camera on my Galaxy S II (or the cameraman) has a hard time focusing onto flashing turn signals at night in dimly lit parking lots.

The night puddle lights are surprisingly useful. You can also judge for yourselves how very useful the folding JDM mirror feature is in a tight parking situation.

 

Awesome with use of your install video... and a cold beer or two out on the driveway on a warm summer weekend ;-) although I did curse the car gods when tryin' to sneak the wire bundle from the left side to the right side, upside down on my back under the dash... reminded me of working on my '66 Mercury Comet back in the very early 1980s.

This mod's intimidating only because of the apparent number of parts and wires. After the mirror pairs' guts are prepped and swapped and remounted and the new wires are run through the door hinges, the mirrors are OEM functional and the rest of the job can be split into little logical sections.
