Air Flow to Windscreen - Faulty.... (Prius 2008 - UK)

    Hi All,
    I am hoping I may get some suggestions to try before having to take my Prius into the Toyota dealer.
    The other day I noticed that my car took longer to defog (demist) but it was not a bad day and just thought it was me imagining it.
    Today however the car misted up whilst I was driving and had to pull over as I could not get the windscreen to demist. I Had to use a cloth to clear the screen.
    On further investigation, the Aircon seems to work fine, heat or cold air arrives in the cabin and all vents push out air except for the vents that feed the windscreen.
    I have read that sometimes the actuator sticks or needs replacing. I am hoping it is just stuck.

    Does anyone have or could send me a diagram of where the actuator is located so I can check it and also how I can get access to it?
    Also is it on a separate fused circuit or on a separate relay that feeds this actuator independently to the other parts of the air flow system?
    Again any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I had not budgeted to have a repair done and if it is something I could possibly do it would be great. I do have good technical skills & used to work in the electronics industry, so taking most things apart and putting back together should not be a challenge.

    Have a look at the following, with the links to other posts as well:

    If the problem is due to the baffles not moving properly, that will help you know where to look. A first step would be to move the airflow through all the various options on the controls, in order to exercise the baffles to the limits. If the A/C is used to defrost the windscreen, which is done for dehumidifying effect, and that system is not working well, then that would be an additional aspect to troubleshoot. If your weather is cold, the A/C may feel cold but, still not be doing as it should.

    But if it’s cold enough AC can’t operate.

    What about a blocked plug in the tray under the windscreen? If that has been blocked by leaves it can fill with water and then overflow into the air intake causing severe misting up. Have a look under the bonnet and make sure all the trays are empty. Often happens just after autumn.

    Another point to check would be your cabin filter and that you're not on Recirc. Also check there is no damp on the front passenger floor as that could be a blocked a/c drain plug or water getting in from the blocked leaves in first paragraph.

    I always look at the cheaper options first before assuming the worst such as a broken actuator. Has your touch screen been playing up lately by chance? Lost radio presets or problems with your central locking too maybe?

    Does it actually plow air to windshield or not? You can feel that pretty easy with hand. It should blow little air to windshield in foot+windshield and lots of air in windshield defrost. Bought of those also blow little to side windows.

    Just an update....
    I've checked under the bonnet and it is empty with no debris or leaves blocking or cutting off vent. I've removed the glove box and checked the filter there and it has a few pieces of debris which I was able to shake out.
    On the passenger side with the glove box removed there are several actuators to the right of the filter (that link and control the air channels I believe). The one that is furthest into the dash is not moving at all (also attached to the biggest wheel like white plastic disc). When I change the direction of flow (windscreen/feet/recirculate) this particular actuator does not even attempt to move? So I am even more suspect it is completely jammed or broken :-( I wanted to try and remove the armature on the actuator to the white wheel/disc so I could try and manually rotate slightly to see if flow would come out to windscreen, but it is just in a position where I cannot get the armature removed.
    Does anyone know if the actuators are all fed from the same fuse? or independent?
    Again thanks for all the comments so far, and again any further knowledge or direction/suggestions I will have a look and try!

    I am in Devon and have the identical problem to you. Toyota Barnstaple have told me that they think it is a broken divertor ( same as actuator?) and will cost circa £1000- mainly 8 hours of labour to take the dash out and put back again!!! No guarantees of success.

    Have you sorted the problem yet?

    I think what happens with these baffles or divertors is due to the periphery being covered with a soft foam of some sort. If it sits for some time in one position, that foam can stick to the sides of the air ducts and become glued in place. If the stuck baffle can be helped to break loose, then it will probably be OK as long as it gets exercised once in a while. If the baffle has actually broken, then that is another matter.

    The dash is apparently not hard to disassemble if the instructions are followed, according to past posters here. DIY is just a matter of what your time is worth.

    Just for the record, I regularly use my A/C during the winter months here in the UK, even when the temperature drops to 0c. I find the dehumidifier capability of the A/C invaluable early in the morning when the interior of the windscreen might have fogged up terribly. A/C - which also kicks in, but is directed mostly at the windscreen when the front demister is invoked, allows me to get underway very quickly without waiting ages for heat to demist the windscreen.
    When everything is clear, and I'm well underway, I'll usually shut this function off and standard heated ventilation will usually compensate beautifully.
    But make no mistake; A/C comes in most handy when unusual interior fogging rears it's ugly head, and can literally be a life saver. Never mind the slight MPG penalty, I'm SO happy to have it on tap when I need it.

    So, I'd say the A/C does work perfectly when it's cold - in the capacity of "Climate Control" :)

    I could not agree more with the above, but unbelievable that Toyota did not fit heated mirrors on the car for our climate. Fortunately this is relatively easy to rectify and at small cost "about £15".

    Hi Everyone,
    My brother took my car into the local dealership who have done me a quote. They think its a Air Flow Servo (Actuator). I assume they connected some diagnostic tool as apparently it is stuck in a 1/2 open/closed position. Yet there is no airflow at all to windscreen. They still are not 100% sure why. Strange I diagnosed no air flow with my hand!
    The quote says it will take them 6 hours to do! So you can see how big the price will be without the parts.
    Has anyone took apart the dashboard? If so how long did it take because I don't think it will take 5-6 hours to do and I feel they are out to make as much money as possible. There is no way they will dedicate a technicians for a full 6 hrs to do. I would of thought that as the car is their own brand of make they only deal with they should be conversant with much of the dismantling and assembly to not require as much time.
    Sigh..... Garages & Labour charges.
    I am likely to have to try and dismantle it myself as money is tight this year due to other expenses, so any more additional info or diagrams would be gratefully appreciated (Do not repost any from previous comments)

    No airflow at all (absolutely nothing)- Nor from the tiny side window vents.

    If your cabin filter was so blocked that you had to shake it free, then try running the climate system with a new filter or with it removed. In the taxi game the cabin filter was often forgotten in the fleet vehicles and the amount of air those cars kicked out was feeble.

    I also wonder if you've experienced any weird problems with your MFD? Touch screen running slow? or slow to respond? I did ask you this earlier but you didn't respond. And is your 12v failing or new and holding it's charge?

    I wonder if your MFD is failing, a very common and expensive fault on gen2's of certain vintage.

    Sorry I did not reply I must of missed doing that, so apologies (you know what its like, read a reply then think i'll tap up an answer later and then when later arrives something else distract us - [normally work or the family lol]). Cabin filter removed and ran for a couple of days without. MFD is running fine and I have had the battery replaced approx. 2-3months ago as the car would could not energise up. (again sorry for missing to reply)

    Definitely no issues with the MFD at all? Slower response than normal? Having to press the screen more than once or harder to get it to accept?

    I know the older MFD's were prone to issues and wonder if the wet UK climate could find weak spots with the newer versions? I'm wondering if it's the signal from the MFD to the a/c system that's not working correctly rather than a dodgy actuator etc.
