never mind the prius, lets see some pix of that '53 chevy!!!

if you can work on cars, the prius ain't that different. and its really a fairly simple car-- not a lot of pointless whistles and bells.

I might do the same, or maybe take it to the mechanic the prior owner would take it to. I'm a little low on time these days and the hot rod needs a cylinder head rebuilt on the small block 350 motor.. For me its more about not knowing what is normal since the Prius is so different.

When you said it was a pre-purchase inspection, and you thought you were charged $75 for it, I naturally assumed they had got ahold of your credit-card before you decided to buy. I was asked for my credit-card at several dealerships where I was looking at cars. Perhaps you meant they tacked it on to the eventual price, in which case I assumed wrongly.

I'm going to try to upload some photos of my 53 later. Right now it keeps giving me errors when I try to.

In any case I paid more attention when I drove home tonight.

The beeping sound that I described actually sounds more like a copier machine. Kind of that rhythmic noise when using a copier machine to print something. The noise is faint but I can hear it. I believe I've heard it more when the car is stopped at a light or in a parking spot. Is that one normal?

I also heard buzzing noise. I seem to hear it when I step on the brakes when going a little faster, or when I am picking up speed and on the gas a bit. It is faint but I also had heard it when I was parked and it sounds like I can hear it under the dash but hard to tell. It is not some random gurgling noise it sounds like something is happening on purpose and it lasts a certain duration of time that is not random. Should I be alarmed?

    Thanks.

Maybe that’s air-conditioning running on pulses. I wouldn’t call that beeping but it sound exactly like copier… It easy to test, just turn off air-con.

That sounds like brake pressure pump.

Ok the buzzing noise seems to happen more when I press on the brake, not every single time but occasionally. I will check fluid levels and other stuff this upcoming weekend. The car stops great. I'm guessing I don't need to be concerned about that one right now?

When I was at a light this morning I heard the engine rev up a little more than usual then went back down, then it switched from gas to electric about 3 times then stayed in electric. Is that normal?

The copier machine sound seems to happen with the AC off. I will have to check to see if I had the AC off for sure but I thought I did.

I took some videos with my phone which I hope capture the noise. I will check and then put on youtube and provide a link. Hopefully someone on here can tell me if I should be alarmed or not.

    Thanks!

Buzzing is definitely brake pressure pump. It pumps pressure in storage so it doesn’t run all the time even when brakes are needed. Totally normal. Only if it starts to run most off the time you should be worried.

If you actually turned AC off then I don’t know about copier sound. To turn AC completely off press Climate and select some blower mode (feet for example) to turn automatic mode off and then press AC so that its “button” is NOT “light”.

Thanks I read the buzzing noise is normal. I will check to see if the AC is off or not and see if the noise changes.

At a light today, I heard the engine rev up a little more than usual on its own. Then the revving went back down, then it switched from gas to electric about 3 times then stayed in electric. Is that normal? No warning or service lights have come on at all.

    Thanks!

Here's a response from the lady that I bought the car from:

I'm glad that you're digging the Prius! All of the electronic sounds that you mentioned and the intermittent revving at stoplights have happened since day 1. It's just the way the hybrid engine operates (as far as I know). You won't even notice the noises after driving it for awhile! There's definitely no need for concern.

Revving at the light? Do you have the A/C, headlights and other accessories (stereo, etc.) on? The ICE may be running to keep these accessories going and charge the HV battery. Try stopping at the light with nothing else on (no stereo, fan, A/C, headlights) and see if that makes a difference. My experience is that if nothing else is on, the Prius will be almost silent when at a dead stop (and assuming the HV battery is carrying a normal charge).

Your battery reading in the MFD should generally be blue or green - not purple - if the HV battery is charging properly.

Thanks! I've seen it green and blue but never purple. I'll keep monitoring it.

nice ride you got there. prius makes all kinds of odd noises that you wouldn't notice in a normal car cause the ICE is always running. just take care of it like a normal car, you'll be fine.

Prius makes noises. When you get in the car before you
Start it push the brake brake pedal irmly a few times.
This will actuate the brake vacuum motor. Sounds like a rattle snake. You will hear that often.
The other sound is after you stop the car and get out to walk away you will hear a motor running that's the thermos motor transferring hot ice coolant into the thermos located right behind the drivers dude headlight.
2 things will ruin your day with a Prius.
One is the 12 volt going dead.
The other is new used car buyer not aware a high mileage Prius eats oil.
Check the oil every morning before starting the car fir a while to get a handle on it.
The VVT system will store a little oil and it takes a while for it to drain back so pulling over and checking the oil wont work.
