Yesterday evening while driving back home suddenly the Multi-Information Display (MID) went black. I thought of taking my 3 years old Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon, not an uppercase) Five to dealer to find out the issue with MID this morning, but the it won't start and the MID is still black.

So far I've tried jumpstarting the 12v battery but still it won't start. I checked the voltage of 12v, its showing me 12.6 volts. I also checked the battery status via diagnostics mode, and its showing within the normal range.
I will check for broken fuses next which I doubt that I'll find one.

Everything else radio, navigation, a/c, etc all are working fine except that I can't shift the gear to Neutral.

    Would appreciate all the help.

I've uploading a video of the MID issue.....and also a video of starting problem. Please check the videos at the following youtube links:-

Sounds like a tow to the dealer. The hybrid system might still be under warranty.

All major hybrid system components have 8yr/100K warranty coverage. Get it to the dealer.

Dealer says bad combination meter sub assembly says will cost $1300 to replace it.
Star-up issue was related to some loose wire connection....so no issues with that.

Planning to replace the meter sub-assembly on my own.....need some guidance regarding how to dismantle the Prius v (lowercase v for the prius v wagon) dashboard. I searched the forum, but only found related to general prius II or III gen vehicle....couldn't find anything related to Prius v (lowercase v for the prius v wagon).

Since you said your 3yr/36k miles just expired 3 weeks ago, you can try to talk to the service writer there and have them goodwill the part under warranty. Some dealers and service writers would be willing to do it. (Usually for regular customers who service their cars there) but if you catch them in a good mood, some will do it. it's just out of the warranty window, which is a bummer.

He would have an even better case, if there was less than 36,000 miles on the odometer.

@CLUBGUY Thanks a lot..... this is what I was looking for to get started.

My odometer reading was slightly above 32.5K miles when the combination meter sub-assembly stopped working.

@Kraze8 ... thanks....will definitely check with the dealer.

@Rude person's .... thanks for the part # and the link to buy it online..... my dealer also gave me the same part #. However, the camelback toyota( the link you mentioned) sent me an email stating that this part has been discontinued and no longer available through Toyota Motor Corp.

This is very strange and bit difficult to digest that the part # has been discontinued via Toyota Motor Corp.

Anyway, I'm checking with other online Genuine OEM parts providers and have also asked my dealer about the part #.

I checked with several online parts dealers, and they are all saying that they cannot sell this part online because this is a special order part and Toyota Motor Corp.s policy requires that the dealer ordering the replacement part have the original part before ordering as they need the odometer values to be transferred from old meter sub-assembly to the new one before they can dispatch the part.

I guess I'll have to take it to dealer and pay the $1300 to replace in case they don't goodwill the part under warranty as suggested by Kraze8.
Another option available is to buy a used meter sub-assembly, but the problem would be that my prius v will assume the mileage values the used meter has and also the risk of developing the same problem.

i would call toyota, and ask if they would contribute to the cause, since you're so close to warranty.

I've have always used carson Toyota (Dealer in CA) or irontoad.com (Lexus dealer in PA) for any OEM parts I've needed. Try contacting them, maybe they can help.

I would give this guy a call at the number listed in his offering to see if he might be able to repair your display.

    04 05 06 07 08 09 Toyota Prius Speedometer Instrument Cluster Display Repair Ser | eBay

Less than $200 would be worth it to me to get this one off of eBay. if I was in your situation.

2013 Toyota Prius v Speedometer Odometer Instrument Cluster Gauges | eBay

You'd have one to use, if you decide to send yours out for repair.

If you got both working, then you can sell the one off of eBay for the same price.

To me, it would be worth the gamble.

Still, if the Toyota dealer replaces the combination meter, the warranty on the new one is only one year.

@bisco, I've sent email to toyota regarding this, thanks for the suggestion though.

@Kraze8, thanks for referring there name, have contacted both carson toyota and irontoad.com for the OEM part.

@Rude person's Part # 83800-47590 is not compatible with the 2012 Toyota Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon)Five model. That is for normal prius liftback.
However, the other ebay link that you sent (2013 prius v lowercase v) that is a compatible part for my prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon) five. Will order that one once I hear back from toyota if they can do anything regarding this or not.

From looking at actual photos of the combination meter and Andy Newhouse's disassembly of the Prius v dashboard, I can see how easy this unit is to remove and replace.

Basically, you have to pull off the silver colored start button panel and gently pull off the center front vents to expose the two screws holding the bottom two end tabs holding the combination meter at the front.

Removing the two screws allows you to pull out the meter and unclip the two wire connector block by squeezing the removal tabs.

The installation is just the reverse of that order.

$1300 to replace the meter is just "highway robbery." And, they guarantee it for just one year.

@Rude person's totally agree with you that $1300 is just "highway robbery" and I'm not gonna pay that amount at any cost. I have asked another dealer in my area and he has quoted me $850 and also said he will ask toyota if they can cover this under basic warranty as a goodwill gesture.
And, you are right it is very easy to install this instrument cluster panel. If toyota doesn't cover it under warranty or give me the discount that I'm looking for then I'll probably buy one of the used ones and install it myself and have my original repaired if someone can.

I did some research and found out that @Rude person's is right regarding the part # of the entire instrument cluster panel.

Entire Instrument Cluster Panel Part # 83800-47590. And as he said this part # is not found in the Toyota's OEM parts catalogue. The reason for this is that this part number (83800-47590) is comprised of several other parts/components and Toyota Motor Corp. doesn't sell this as one single unit/part/component; instead it sells all the components separately and have separate part number for each component. And, I guess this form factor is same across all the prius models.

The part # 83809-47020 is called as the combination meter sub-assembly. This is the part which displays the speedometer, odometer values, time, fuel guage, shift position indicator, the DRCC (Vehicle distance indicator when DRCC is engaged) and the Hybrid System Indicator(shows hybrid system power output and regenerative charging). The retail price of this part is around $613.00.

The part # 83861-47590 is called the Meter Circuit Plate or simply circuit board meter. The retail price of this part alone is $1600 if purchased separately. This parts contains all the LED indicators (Turn signal, Headlight, Tail Light Headlight High Beam, Front fog light, Security, Ready, Eco Driving, ECO MODE, POWER MODE, Cruise Control, Radar Cruise Control, SET, Slip) and Warning lights that turn on when the 'POWER' switch is to ON mode or ACC mode. However, this meter circuit plate and the combination meter sub-assembly is soldered together. And, interestingly both of these parts are sold under one part either as Part # 83809-47020 i.e., as Combination meter sub-assembly if there's any fault in the odometer/speedometer sub-assembly and charged $613.00 or as Part # 83861-47590 i.e., as Meter Circuit Plate if there's any fault in the circuit board and customers are charged $1600.

    The other parts include the glass cover(Part # 83852-47580), meter cover(Part # 83821-47590), meter bracket No. 1(Part # 83855-47590), meter bracket No. 2(Part # 83856-47590) and other small components.

It shows again how "knowledge is money." And, also like "tools in the toolbox."

The more you have; the better off and more successful you are.

If you don't have much income, like me, you have to try to keep as much of it as you can.

    Hi there,

I have the same problem, my Prius V 2012 Wagon is having the same problem, it is not starting. Its intermittent especially on colder days.

I've had the car for 6.5 years and done 62K mileage. Will I be covered with with Toyota warranty..?

I saw some one say this part has a 8yr 100K warranty...?

Please advise what I should do?

    Thank you.
