The purpose of this thread is to try to capture the many cases of Toyota providing "goodwill warranty" assistance to many Prius owners when their hybrid battery dies outside of the 100% coverage envelop of the warranty. Note that this is a "compendium" thread for tracking positive outcomes. Individual cases in progress are best discussed by the owner posting a separate new thread, as has been the Prius Chat general practice.

Here is what I have so far:
    Goodwill warranty3.jpg
I will show user names if the user says it is OK. That's a good way for others to search on your thread.

    Contact Numbers:
We should also try to capture contact numbers used at Toyota, and those dealers with service deptartments which seem to be good at helping owners apply for this special treatment.
(800-331-4331, option 4: “Concern or problem with vehicle or dealer”) is our latest number.

    Keep Trying-
The key point is, when your HV battery or other major component dies, by contacting Toyota USA HQ, either yourself or via a helpful dealer service dept, often times Prius owners can get a good deal on battery replacement. Some examples are Prii just outside of warranty, another case is probably that CARB states get better consideration for various reasons.

But before you get that good deal, many owners have had some dealers tell them "no way" and even Prius Chat members may regret to inform you that you are out-of-warranty. But when we say that, we are just trying to help you understand your predicament. We almost never know if Toyota would be willing to help you out for some reason in your specific case, and we don't know internal Toyota policy details for certain exceptions if any, and so on. Therefore you have to be willing to take "no" for the first answer, and try again at another dealership or with Toyota HQ.

Please feel free to add cases in following posts.

The other proviso is, we almost never have the complete facts on PriusChat for a specific VIN...we just have owner perception and account of details.

Another column indicating extent of service done by dealership: seldom/infrequent, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% Toyota dealer. Of the goodwill warranties I am aware of, this aspect seems to have been the commonality: the more maintenance done at a dealership, better the outcome for these out of warranty folks.

One guy bought a CPO from a Toy dealership. Original owner had all maintenance done at the dealership. A few months later, the current second owner got the HV Battery error code. 2nd owner gave the impression that no further maintenance performed at a Toyota dealership. Toyota finally offered good will warranty for this guy; an Oregon case IIRC.

Above I have updated the selected example cases. For past cases, I see we usually have odometer miles, but for car age, we often do not have exact Years-Months from orig purchase.

    A couple of initial findings-

MARYLAND: are doing reasonably well getting partial coverage of batteries under 150k miles. Maryland did not join CARB until 2011 so that means Gen2 owners over 8-yrs 100k miles could be out of luck. But those reporting on PriusChat are seeing decent goodwill coverage. Some also going to Greentec, new rebuilt batt option.

CALIFORNIA: I believe we have two recent cases of new CA residents from non-CARB states with 2006 Prii (NC and AZ) and both cases they were told by Toyota the warranty covers their VIN (no apparent need for goodwill). That is not enough data to prove an exception to the rules as we understand them, but I wonder. In the AZ/CA case I lost the thread if someone can recall please advise me by PM or reply.

I live in Nevada and my 2006 Prius just gave the dreaded Red Triangle of death, so It looks like my HV Battery is dead, any insight on whether this car is still under the warranty?

You are asking a question for a thread that is intended to highlight the exceptions/extensions of CARB warranty for the HV Battery in CARB and non-CARB states.
    1) Have you even bothered to look in your warranty manual that came with you car? All the info is in there.
    2) As far as I can tell, Nevada is not a participant of CARB, therefore, 8years/100,000miles HV Battery warranty for you.
    3) Year wise, you are over, if indeed 8yr/100,000miles.
    4) You don't list your mileage, but we don't need to know that, Toyota does.
    5) Don't be so lazy. You really need to do some leg work yourself to definitively find out.
    6) If you or the previous owner(s) had this car, regularly serviced at a Toyota dealer, you stand a better chance that they might cut you a break, b/c of "customer loyalty."
    7) If you want to attempt any Toyota "Goodwill" warranty (or Customer Loyalty), Toyota needs the diagnosis confirmed by a Toyota dealer. You will likely be paying $100 plus to the dealer to confirm diagnosis, and ask them to ask Toyota for "Goodwill." You can also call Toyota Customer Care yourself. But you need to start wit the dealer.
    Good luck.

Thanks to 2005DMNY for being our first new case. I like this case, $1800 for new Toyota batt is not too shabby. Perhaps I'll try this myself if the time comes. Also 2005DMNY gave some good tips in his follow-up.

Just wanted to add my experience after finding several of the cells in my 2004 hybrid battery were shot. Thank goodness for PriusChat, where I found out about goodwill warranty and aftermarket reconditioned batteries.

My dealer, where I bought the car and had service done, left a message that replacement would be $3800 out the door. Because I had read up here on PriusChat before I talked to her, I asked if Toyota would give any goodwill concession since I was under the 150,000 mile part of the warranty (118,000) and I asked their thoughts on reconditioned batteries. She said she would have her manager check with Toyota and talk to the mechanics since she was unfamiliar with the reconditioned batteries. I found reviews for several places who installed reconditioned batteries in San Diego and the one with the best reviews (from LA) would charge about $1900 to install their premium battery (all cells from 2-3 year old Priuses) with a four year warranty. I also called Toyota myself, with the number given here, since I'd read about some having good success but the upshot from them was nope, not doing anything. Rats.

However, the dealer called me back and said that Toyota had agreed to pay half the cost of the battery, so my cost would be about $2000 out the door. The mechanics didn't recommend the reconditioned batteries, and said they'd had some people come in with problems related to them (not surprised- it is competition and some reconditioners probably are unscrupulous). I honestly was surprised (but pleased) that the dealer was able to get the deal from Toyota when I wasn't. Since the difference at this point was only about $100, I decided to go with the dealer and the replacement battery. Take home: it does pay to ask about the goodwill warranty.

I bought my 2006 Pruis on Nov 2014 with 172,000 miles in California. Now all the lights are on (Ck engine,VSC.Triangle, brake) and found out the codes P0A80. The Pruis is within the 10 year emission warranty but over in mileage. I have not had the chance to establish service records with Toyota. But 3 years ago I worked as a Service Advisor for 6 years. When I call the Toyota # should I mentioned that I worked for Toyota(will it help or hurt my chances). Plus the car is still registered in California but I am living in Las Vegas. Will a Nevada dealership honor a California emissions warranty or do I need to take it to California for service? Do I have a better chance just calling Toyota or first taking it to the Nevada Dealership. Thats if it alright to take it to a Nevada dealership. Finally it probably hurts my chances that I only owned it 6 months and by mileage it was out of warranty when purchased. How should I handle this situation. Thank you for providing Pruis owners with so much information

You have no warranty, it's over by mileage. What's there to honor?
