Is there some way i can turn off the backup beeping, I've not seen anything for the 2012 Prius, and the instructions I have found online do not work.

welcome! you can try it with a code reader, or ask your dealership for a freebie.

You can't turn it off completely, but you can reset it to just one beep. You need an ODB2 device (like the one below) that plugs into the ODB port and then a phone/tablet you can connect via Bluetooth with an app that will let you communicate with the ODB device. ELM327 Terminal is one such free app, but it has a command line type interface that can be difficult. Carista is another app often mentioned here. I has a nice GUI type interface and works with a wide variety of settings that can be changed. I believe it still has a trial period and then costs $0.99-$19.99 after that depending on what options you want to purchase. As others have mentioned, some dealerships will change some codes for free.

Unfortunately the Gen III can only be adjusted to 1 beep in reverse whereas the Gen II could be turned off altogether. When I traded in my 2008 for my 2013, the first thing I told the dealer was that I wanted the reverse beeper changed. The dealer acted like it was a big problem but I told him the car wasn't leaving without having it done. It took the mechanic 5 minutes to do it.

Where are you located? If near the bay area I can do it for you. That one beep when put in reverse is such a sweet sound!

I suspect any instructions you found online were for the Gen 2 Prius, where the beeping could be turned off without tools.

The Gen 3 Prius can have the constant beeping turned to one beep by:
    1) the dealer can do it with his software. (this is often free, especially if you negotiated it before the sale)
    2) you can buy an On Board Diagnostic II scanner like the Scangauge. ScanGauge II ODB Scan Tool + Digital Gauges + Trip Computers - PriusChat Shop
    3) you can download software to make your bluetooth Android device into a OBDII scanner, and buy a bluetooth to OBDII conveter.
Torque Pro (OBD 2 & Car) - Android Apps on Google Play
Amazon.com: Panlong Bluetooth OBD2 OBDII Car Diagnostic Adapter Check Engine Light for Android - Compatible with Torque Pro: Automotive

    I chose option 2

I have a 2012 prius and customized mine to just have the one beep when in reverse. Thats why Im actually only able to guarantee my service to Gen 3 owners.

I got a wifi ELM327 adapter and use the carista app to customize or change settings on the Gen3 prius. And thank you, glad to be part of the group

I just brought mine into my dealership while getting my service done. Just asked them about changing it to 1 beep. They might give you a hard time about the safety of it yada yada since the Prius is so quite, but be persistent. First the service personal gave me a hard time and said it would cost me some $$, then I told her it would literally just be 5 mins for the tech to do it. Got it done free, and now I have 1 beep. Definitely a must do mod.

I don't understand why people are so annoyed by the beeping. I don't mind it and believe it goes unnoticed. In fact, I had to go and listen to the beep after reading through a few posts here because I didn't even know it did it. That's how unnoticed the beeping was for me.

We have an echomaster ultrasonic reverse sensor system installed. It beeps at varying intervals to alert you to how close approaching objects are. Two sets of beeping while in reverse is unacceptable.

I had my reverse beep turned off this weekend during my first service visit to the dealership. I'm so happy that it is gone!
