First: I need the Patent number to verify this.

Second: As an engineer with 6 patents myself, IF this is real, Toyota may only be trying to prevent anyone else from creating a Flying Prius without their permission.

Third: The design illustrated does not look aerodynamically stable.

I don't see anything in the patent suggesting that it would be part of the Prius family, just some sort of 'aerocar'. It seems that someone downstream slapped a Prius label on it based solely on the profile, which happens to fit well with the stowed airfoils.

Patent was released yesterday, just assuming its part of this vegas prius anouncement ad. Nothing says prius on the patent, and from the looks of it, this will be an advertising (probably internet only) patent, not something that toyota wants to sell and build.

The Prius is already drive-by-wire, and at the "Reveal" it was fly-by-wire. So they're making progress in the flying department.

The Patent process has always been this way. Many years ago, someone patented towing a barge across the ocean with a blimp.

A patent is granted when it meets the following:
    1. The invention is unique, with no "prior art" from anyone else.
    2. The invention is possible under the laws of physics. (No perpetual motion ideas.)
    3. The invention is not obvious to anyone else in that field.

    That's all it takes.

A patent guarantees that you have the sole right to produce and sell your invention for a short number of years. After that anyone can make it.

A patent does not guarantee that the invention is easy to produce, nor that the holder of the patent can make any money from it.
