Sorry to hear. TRS has always taken care of me. I've bought hundreds of dollars of merchandise from them. Very rarely do I have a problem.
I've never once installed a relay on any of my past vehicle. I go from experience. That's why I haven't installed relay.
I have had the 2 ballast go out on me from TRS, but I've always been taken care of. One on my Subaru and one on my Prius.
The one on my Prius was on for over 2 years.

How much time passed before the ballasts went out? Did your headlights just shut off?

It was a little over 2 years or so. And I noticed they would flicker on and off and then stay on for a while then off for a while.
Maybe it was because I've never used a relay, but I honestly don't know

I was thinking about getting a kit from trs with the canbus. I contacted them (about a year ago) and they told me the reason they recommend the canbus relay is because there are no good + connection points under the hood. He said something about older versions of these cars having a post in the engine compartment and that it has been removed in the newer models.

I believe the 5500k like what I have are rated 2500-3000 hours. That would mean the lifetime of owning the vehicle I would think in alot of cases.

I got the 5000ks. That was before they had the 5500k.
TRS replace them for me because I was still under the warranty.

I wonder if there is a noticeable reduction in light output if the HD Relay isn't used?

No disrespect, but I assume you are answering that from experience of doing it both ways?

Would there be a reduction in life expectancy of the bulbs or ballasts when not using the HD relay?

yep, I had it first without to see if I would like it.
after I drove at night I installed the harness the next day & it was the same brightness as without/

the life expectancy I don't know, but I think if you always turn on your lights with the engine running (which is recommended neway), or like in the Prius in ready state, it shouldn't influence the longevity of the bulbs or ballasts/

Do you mean that I should I wait until I hear the engine turn on after I press Start and put it in Drive or Reverse? Or is it safe to turn on the headlights right after pressing Start without hearing the engine turn on?

As long as car in Ready mode, doesn't matter if engine is running or not.

The auxiliary battery voltage is only 12.x volts, versus 14.4v or so when DC to DC inverter is online in Ready mode.

I recommend using a dual relay HID harness vs a single relay harness. Or a single relay HID harness vs directly connecting HID ballasts to oem wiring harnesses.

once you see the ready sign, the electricity comes from the big battery, meaning that you will have hardly ne voltage fluctuations which could be a factor regarding the life time/
so, as soon as you see the ready sign, you're on the safe side for switching the lights on/

Above there have been some members who stated that they do not use any relay at all. Why do you recommend one in my case if the headlights work better without the relay? Now they turn on and stay on until I shut them off. With a relay it wasn't like that.

    Awesome! Thanks, man!

I installed the HD Relay harness but couldn't get it as clean looking as I wanted it so I'm just gonna remove it.

Because you were using a canbus relay or wiring harness, not the dual relay HID harness. There is a difference.

not sure I have a fix ! Seems like it's random left then right not firing up! Tap a volt meter to the OEM harness to the canabus input to see if the system gets and sustain needed current! Seems like shutting it self down like my jetta once it detects a imbalance in the voltage and current draw! I maybe wrong ? Retrofit people recommended use 2 x capacitor on each headlight! It worked for the jetta!

I took the HD Relay out tonight and at first there seemed to be an almost imperceptible flicker as the HID bulb was warming up, but honestly I think I might have imagined it. I watched the light on the garage wall very closely for such a long time that I saw after image for probably 10 minutes after I turned the lights off. If I notice the flicker any more I'll put the relay back on.
