Here are PDF versions of the slide stack they used to introduce more details on the 2016 Prius this morning. They are fairly large files, so I've put them up on Google Drive for download.

Thanks for the info, Danny. Looking around the web, I see a 30 horsepower improvement and a target of 59MPG. That is impressive!

    • Are there any details about when "Toyota Safety Sense P" will be available in the USA?
      • Is it being delayed because of the NHTSA and IIS activity in this area?
      • What could accelerate making it available in the USA?

Yay! They will move the 12 volt battery out of the passenger compartment! That should make it safer and cheaper.

I always thought it was better to have the 12 Volt located aft. I was under the impression, when located in the engine compartment, that the heat cycles shorten the life span.

Correct. The risk of having it inside the passenger compartment is entirely on humans, not the battery. I would rather pay for more, cheaper, batteries that do not endanger humans.

doesn't seem like prius batteries last longer than those in the engine bay, but that maybe due to size more than heat.

Over in Autoline Daily, they have no clue about the 2016 Prius. The commenters at GreenCarCongress don't understand it either ... so far.

This car is going to shock the market.

ps Austin can confirm folks steer around them not only to avoid body damage but punctured tires.

Gen III to Gen IV definitely appears to be a much bigger jump in technicality, drive-ability, and performance. It is beginning to look like another successful generation is afoot!

    Sounds great !
New Eco - Mode is current Normal-Mode !
I assume gen 4. Normal-Mode will be similar to gen. 3s Power Mode .
If so then what will gen. 4 Power-Mode be like ?
No word about system power output yet,but up to now the staff manual seems to be pretty accurate, but still I can't believe they reduced it to 122 hp !

    Yeah, I noticed that.

Just reading through the first document, titled "Hybrid Vehicle Engineering", one thing I come away with: a lot of the touted improvements seem to be in comparison with the current model. For me they stretch credulity.

..no more planetary gear in the PSD?
    That is a surprise.

    Yes.

When I first got my gen 3 I studied several on line documents before understanding how a planetary gear set could replace a conventional transmission. Once I did understand it, it seemed like a brilliant and elegant process. It also seemed essential to the operation of the HSD.

So now I would like a clear explanation how the new Parallel gears work to send power to and from different components and how this change improves efficiency.

I think it is no more second planetary gear. The main is still there.

European Auris HSD is already like that, but it's just the throttle pedal response. "Collateral effects" (i.e. a/c slower in ECO and engine idling in power etc.) are kept the same.
