I recently got a 2nd FOB for my 2004 Prius. I was able to get it to work. Then I wanted to get the keyless entry to work. I gave this article to my son and asked him to try it.

toyota - How do I add a second key fob to my 2008 Prius - Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Stack Exchange

He said it was successful. Then he left on vacation for a week. I went to open my car and the new fob and old fob will not open the car! Now I am locked out (and I don't have a physical key). Any ideas what I can try?

    Thanks!

    Hello Alice,

How long has it been sitting around? How old is the battery? Your battery could be dead.

If you are able to get the hood open, you could jump the aux battery enough to get the doors open. Then replace the battery.

Otherwise, if you know someone with a slimjim, that could open your door. Otherwise, a lock smith?

Thanks! Are you asking about the car battery or the battery in the FOB? I don't know the answer to either. I bought the car about a month ago and didn't inquire. Are you thinking that the problem is with the car battery - that it might be dead? I could call AAA to come give me a jump start, but that probably wouldn't help if I can't get in the car:(

    Too funny.

If you have a towing service, say AAA or a service through your auto insurance, call them. Tell them you need:
    1) A door unlocked by a "slim jim" type device. Once a door is unlocked, pop open the engine hood, so a jump start can be performed, b/c the 12V battery is drained.
    2) With the hood open, attach the booster cables to the jumper points in the engine compartment, so the Prius can get into "READY." Think of "READY," as the engine is on and running, even though the engine may not turn on immediately.

As you wait for the tow truck driver, start calling Toyota dealers to find out the cost of getting a physical key made when you don't know the five digit key number, and what documents will be required to get this key made (Pink Slip, current vehicle registration, etc). Get the two mini keys made so these fit into the Prius key fob.

Sometimes people think it is successful, but it is not.
The original key is nearby and is doing the unlocking, instead of the replacement key fob.

Once you get back into your car and have the key fobs we can help you check things out.

    Some questions....
    - Is the smart key button by your knee pressed in, or is it out?
    - Where did you get the replacement key?
    - Was it used? Or was it new?
    - Is the symbol on the back silver or black?
    - Did you get a metal physical key cut as well?

Unless you've removed it, you should have a key in the FOB.

Yes, the physical key did work and my battery was dead! Recharged the battery and now everything is working great!
