Replacing a module would be viewed as negative.

I would not try to hide the fact that you replaced a module.
When a Toyota pack is installed, the old pack is opened up and inspected before the work is done. You can see all the modules and electronics.
Looking for mismatched cells is one of the steps in inspecting it.
If it is tampered with, the warranty work will be denied.

Sidenote.... Can you take a moment to go back and update you original problem thread? ie, identify how you fixed the problem based on the advice you were given and how long the fix lasted? Multiple Warning Lights - Pictures Attached | PriusChat

No warranty whatsoever. Hv Battery warranty for NC is 8yr/100K miles. Initial problem in 7-2014 @ 111K miles; you were out of warranty by 9mos/11K miles.

The only upside is you didnt do an expensive fix on a HV Battery that still had warranty left. Toyota Prius Battery | PriusChat

Those are all valid points. We were already out of warranty when the original problem occurred (and fairly cash strapped at the time), so fixing just the problem cells seemed like the right choice.

When did Toyota's "Goodwill Warranty" program first come about? If it was an option back in Jul 2014, I wish I had given it a shot.

Thanks for pointing that out - I have gone back into that original thread and updated it with notes on how long the fix lasted. Hopefully this will add to the knowledge base of fixing individual cells...

It has probably been in existance for sometime. I know my in-law got some financial relief for an out of warranty repair, and this was in the early 1980's. Manufacture's can't shorten the warranty, but they are under no legal obligation to extend it or offer any discount for expired warranties. It is probavly safe to assume that each manufactures has a goodwill gesture, for their customers, at their discretion.

You replaced a module(s). Each module consists of 6 individual cells. It would be near impossible to replace a cell/cells inside a module: how does one open then reclose the plastic casing without affecting all of the internal components.

Thanks, that is really helpful. I notice that my mileage (165,000) is a lot higher than those listed on the chart. It's still worth a try!

After reading these posts, I called my dealership. Since it's Sunday, the manager isn't there, but the salesperson said she would leave him a message that I'd like him to contact Toyota headquarters and ask if I can have a goodwill discount. She said as long as I've had all or most of my work done with them, they will usually either give you a good discount or split the bill 50/50! I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks for the great advise; it never would have occurred to me to do that!

Yes, orig owner and bought in CA

California 2006 Prius. Got dreaded P0A80 code 10 years+38 days and 147K miles after in-service date, Dealer contacted factory rep. who offered 50% off an OEM, remanufactured-by-Toyota, battery (yes, Toyota does reman. batteries!) for $925 (if dealer installed). OTD cost, with 3-year/unlimited miles warranty, about $1,780.
Detailed accounting can be found here.

Hmmm (n) Hard to resist doing the math: $1,780/147,000 miles = 1.21 cents/mile, which for a lifetime MPG average of about 45 miles per gallon, means my cost for hybrid battery replacement was equivalent to: (1.21 cents/mile) x (45 miles/gallon) or a $0.55/gallon "battery tax" on every gallon of gas purchased. Ouch! :( Try tossing that figure out in "Goodwill" negotiation. ;)
I admit the Prius has been the most trouble-free car I've owned by far, but it still hurts. Note: The "tax" goes up as mileage improves.

If you drive it another 147000 miles, the tax goes down to half. Treat the battery as any other repair you would do and it won't hurt as much

Well another way to look at it, you saved $3000 in gasoline, at the expense of $1800 in battery costs. But the battery is new so you can save a couple more thousand if you keep it. Luckily you have further cost reductions due to low of ownership (less brake repairs etc). Bit of a hard sell, I admit.

    >>Folks, AK_James experience may signal a somewhat less generous goodwill battery replacement policy by Toyota. I'd say in 2015, an original Prius owner in California just days over the warranty, got a slam dunk free battery replacement. Instead AK was OTD $1800 with a Toyota refurbished battery.

AK also pioneered the finding that Toyota is now offering Toyota USA refurbished batteries in some cases, which is totally new information. We assume the individual NiMH cells are new, but we are not sure yet. AK has wisely chosen to not rip his new remanufactured battery apart to confirm new cells. Although we pressured him hard to do so.

So it still makes good sense to ask Toyota for help to reduce battery replacement costs. But it seems to be a new ball-game here in 2016.

Let's face it, if you look at the population of used Prii, 2007 and 2008 are when sales really took off, so if you are Toyota USA, you are probably anticipating a long line of battery replacement customers coming in soon.

Anyone under 150k miles and 10-years really needs to ask Toyota for battery assistance, because the warranty language is quite unclear in my mind. Therefore do not assume you are not covered, rather assume you could be covered, and let Toyota USA tell you otherwise. My approach anyways. Unfort I am 153000 miles now I have less of a legal case (none actually).

Well, I tried calling Toyota for goodwill when my HV battery died recently. No dice...

But it was a 2004, however with only 110K I thought I might have a shot at something since I'm in CA. They were polite but not willing to offer assistance.

This new info about Toyota refurbished is new. I looked into option extensively and decided on a rebuilt Dorman through NAPA for 3 yr warranty and proximity should there be problems during warranty period. Came out to around $1500 with tax.

Wish I had known about a rebuilt by Toyota battery option, this must be new this year or some kind of state secret.

I'd say there was a time when you might have fared better - nice try.

It's great you went to Napa for this battery, my feeling is this battery will fail within 3 years and you have a local dealer that can return the battery to for warranty purposes.

We have a 2007 Camry Hybrid we got for my wife's mother that now has 78k miles (bought used with just under 40k miles). It just threw codes P0A80 and P3021, about one year out of warranty by date (9yr old). We are in Texas, car was originally purchased in Texas, so no CARB. My mother in law took it to her mech. who quote $2k+ and when I called the dealer they were $4k+, and they said it was out of warranty. No hint of, "Hey lets see what we can do". After doing a lot of internet searches and feeing like a "remanufactured battery" for $1200 could not be better than a battery with such low miles with one module swaped I bought two modules with the intent of swapping the bad ones out, but chickened out after getting the pack out and knowing how much time I actually had to finish it. After posting on the module balancing thread I was sent a link to here. I am going to try calling Toyota tomorrow.

Toyota offered 1/2, so it ended up being $2000 from Toyota with 3yr warranty on battery. They also changed out the brake master cylinder that had a recall, so that was a bonus.

I recently got out of warranty goodwill assistance from Toyota.
I bought used from the dealer last year. 2006, one owner. Right under 70k miles when the battery died. Toyota offered $975 and reduced labor. Orignal quote was $3,308. Ended up paying $2,100. This is my first car, so I didn't have much of a history at Toyota, but I have only used the dealer for service. Hope the car lives on to 200k :)
