Anyone have recent experience with new tires?

Nice! Looks like we tied with 85k miles out of the OEM EP20. I wanted to swap them out for the EP422+ but being the middle of rainy season, everywhere was out of stock and I couldn't wait. I wrote about what I ended up with here.

My EV distance was in the single digits for months. It's never been that low. I thought it was a combination of winter, non LRR tires, and battery degradation. The thing is, now that it is summer and I've put another 20k on the car the mpg difference from OEM is now negligible. I am back up to my usual 11 EV miles last week on the guess-o-meter. Still a bit lower than OEM but not shockingly low and acceptable to me for half the cost.

 

Last week I bought new tires for by Prius. The were P215/45R-17 Michelin Primacy MXM4 from TireRack. Cost with shipping was $442.12. I haven't noticed any much if any change in MPG nor noise level; but I haven't taken any long trips yet.

 

a couple of months ago i decided to make sure i had very good tires on my used 2012. i got michelin defenders. they have worked great ive already put 2000 mile with a trip to daytona etc. they handle better. they seem a little quieter and i did not notice any change in mileage. i had only had my prius about a month at the time and my ecos were ok. im very satisfied.

I'm at about 60k miles on the Yokohama Avid S33s, so it's about time to replace them. Should I get the Michelin Energy Saver A/S from Costco for $505 out the door (with the $70 off Michelin sale) right now, or hold out to see if they switch to the Bridgestone sale next month and go with Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus for an estimate of $415 out the door (assuming a $70 off Bridgestone sale one of these months)?

 

Michelin Premier A/S seriously killed MPGe - almost 15% reduction. This is over winter and spring and about 6K miles. The upside is that ride and handling are greatly improved. There's almost always some kind of sale, if not at Costco then at Discount Tire (you'll have to wait for a Visa Gift Card from Discount Tire, but it's good anywhere)

 

I'd think either name brand will be OK.
Buy the tires if worn out (some say at 2/32).
Reads like you have an option to wait to do your purchase.

IMO: Any drop in miles per gallon could be offset over the life of the vehicle tires based on tire tread wear rating and vehicle wheel alignment. Plus the tires cost differences. A mathematically spreadsheet may help you decide.

Yet again, if you need tires buy them.
An accident will offset all these analyses.

I would get the michelin premier. They significantly out perform the energy a/s in the things that will save your life

i have a bad tyre. there's still plenty of tread, so i'm thinking of replacing two. michelin energy saver are $125. each at tyre rack, plus ship and recommended mobil install = $450.

 

What are these things that will save lives? I live in SoCal, where we don't get any rain, so I'm not concerned about wet performance, and I'll never take it to snow.

 

i wouldn't give up 1/10 mpg to save my life.

 

Damn, I go to purchase the Michelin Energy Saver A/S at Costco (since the $70 off Michelin and $60 off Bridgestone expires tomorrow), but they're gone from the website and the stores say they can't order them anymore. I'm pretty frustrated with them over it, but it's what I get for not ordering them when I saw them in stock. Oh well, I guess I'll get the Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus during the Bridgestone sale. I was looking forward to checking out the Michelin Energy Saver A/S.

 

one of the reasons i went with the defenders instead of energy savers was availability. it seems they were tough to get. so i thought...what happens if i need to replace one.....i must say that i have been more than pleased with the michelin defenders. great tire ...

 

How bad? Defective construction, sidewall gash, mystery leak, puncture too close to edge of tread for patching? I've been told the latter once, and a second time had a puncture about the same location ( within an inch of edge). Both times I just plug repaired and they've held up ok.

 

can't see anything, but it's a bit noisy, kind of a wump, wump wump sound, like a flat spot or something.

 

Sounds like it's coming apart inside, yeah not good. Maybe a warranty case.

 

Now I feel like Costco pulled a fast one on me. 3 days after the sale ends the tires are back in stock...

 

On the Michelin site viewing 195/65R15 tires, for "fuel efficiency" they rate them (out of 10):

Energy Saver (either all season or summer): 10
Premier: 9
Defender: 8

Maybe they improve with age and as tread wears though. Our (17") Pilots are rated 7, but they seem to roll pretty good.
