New battery-only firmware?

    Now that the new Prius Prime has been programmed to run "battery only" til the juice is gone before firing up the gas engine (like the Chevy Volt), do you think they might make that firmware available for the older Prius Plugins? I'd pay to get that!

    Never happen... The 51 HP drive motor on a PIP doesn't have enough "oomph" to be safe by itself in emergency maneuver such as accelerating ahead of a non-yielding trucker on an entrance ramp. The Prime has a 91 HP drive motor.

    oh, if you mean you can stomp on it without the engine coming on, i get it.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn' the PiP purposely stay in the 20 to 80% charge range to prevent early battery failure? I would not want to push the envelope and risk buying a new battery.
