Cruise control does not exist on JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) cars. Japanese regulations do not allow it. Maybe it will change in the future?

Cruise control is made for Prius that are exported, where countries allow it (like the USA).

What? Where did you get that information. The Prius G, G Touring Selection and G Touring Selection w/ Leather have cruise control.

In the U.S., the base model Prius I, sold originally to corporate and government fleets but not to ordinary consumers, generally lacked cruise control and some other features. These cars do show up on the used car market later. It seems that Japanese market arrangements could be similar.

I have the European "Life" version with no cruse control. "Life" comes with practically nothing. I got A/C and Radio/CD player but it drives good and I'm happy with it.

There's a cruise control switch for sale in our local "eBay". Just wondering how big a job wuold it be to install it? Does it require visiting the dealer?

the job should only require a screwdriver, wire strippers and electrical tape. if you are mechanically inclined it shouldn't take more than half an hour. if you really want someone else to install it for you just take it to an independent mechanic or car audio shop, should be no more 1 hour of labor.

So there is no configuration needed in the car computer? It just starts working?

I was thinking of buying one too but I have the same question as you. Will it work after installing? Doesn't the onboard computer need any update, calibration or at least configuration change?
All I can tell you is that Toyota did not wanted to install one in my car. They "need" to keep the car as you bought it cause otherwise people will buy the cheapest versions and update it to something higher for less money.

Yeah, I tried it. Bought an used one, plugged it in and it worked.
As I remember when I was searching Toyota used the same cruise control "switch" for Prius from 2004 to 2015 or something. Also used the same switch in other car models so you should be able to find a spare really easy, e-bay for example.

I recently bought a 2011 Japanese import Prius without cruise control and followed the instructions in http://priuschat.com/attachments/toyota-prius-2010-cruise-control-pdf.27367/ but it doesn't work. Above in the second comment exstudent writes that cruise control does not exist in any Japanese domestic cars, which I find hard to believe since googling "japanese domestic car market cruise control" doesn't come up with anything obvious confirming that but instead Japanese people talking about cruise control in their Japanese cars.

So, I was wondering if anyone knows more about this and if there is actually a chance of making this work. Clearly if the computer doesn't offer the functionality because it was deliberately removed or excluded then there'd be little chance but perhaps I just need another connection somewhere?

I would check if the part that you got is something that you can use.
The instructions have information on how many ohms each function should have. If you have a multimeter you can try and look for those numbers. If they don't match, you have a bad hardware.
