I was assuming that his comment "Some people have plasti dipped the steering wheel" meant the wheel - like someone else has done to part of their rims.

I believe in Canada, at least a few years ago, the plates stay with the vehicle when it is sold. In the US, they are retained by the driver and transferred to their new vehicle. At least , that was how it worked in Ontario in the 1970s and early 80s.

Check out this posting. The photos appear to be in reverse order, though, starting with the finished product.

My Canadian set of plates is almost worn out (barely readable) after many transitions from old to new cars.

In Ontario before 1973 you needed to get new plates every calendar year. They alternated between black on white & white on black.
When they transitioned to the new plates with stickers, the transitional expiry was the end of your birth month to distribute the expirations.

BC made a special plate to honour the 2010 Winter Olympics. Only trouble: they're much harder to read, lower contrast.

    Regular plate:

The cut-and-pastes are actually kinder. On a car, especially in dark/rainy conditions, very difficult to discern.

One of Virginia's optional (for a fee) plates a few years ago was recalled & replaced with a redesigned version. The original design background was covered in orange Autumn leaves, making the blue text difficult to read. The revised design just has the leaves around the border.

Here is the original design (found on eBay)

    Anybody want to try this?

The US has the technology, but I think we fail at proper application.
Perhaps in addition to Big Brother you guys have some common sense too.
