Black Steering Wheel Appliqué

    His is white probably. I believe the 2 and the 2 eco have that black lower part of the steering wheel. Trims 3 and higher have the white plastic material much like the material around the rest of the steering wheel around the phone call and hang up buttons.

    Plastic dip comes in a spray can. Usually people use it to paint rims, and they come out looking really nice.

    Hmm, the problem is that I assume that would require removing the part to be sprayed, which I think would involve taking off the airbag. That's beyond my abilities.

    My interior is black. Everything is black except the shifter bezel and the button area and lower part of the steering wheel, which are white. I got the official Toyota black shifter appliqué today and it looks great. Matches all the other glossy black around the radio, etc. I don't mind the little bit of white around the steering wheel buttons, but I'd really like to make the lower part of the wheel black, exactly like the pic I posted. Here's before and after pics of the shifter. And a pic of my steering wheel.

    Careful masking before spraying can work, too. The tricky bit with Plasti Dip is it dries into a pretty strong rubber sheet like balloon skin, and when you pull up your masking around the edges, you may well peel the whole layer off. (That's a reason people like Plasti Dip to experiment with new car looks ... change your mind, just peel it off).

    It is soluble in solvents like naphtha (which is one of the solvents it is dissolved in, in the can). I've been known to fill a fountain pen with naphtha and go around the edges of some dried dip to soften a clean line where I want it to part when peeling the excess off.

    Dip will be matte, not glossy black like your interior.

    Not necessarily, you can cover with tape and paper like painters do. It would take time, but it can be done.

    Would the black Plasti Dip color match close enough to the rest of the black on the steering wheel/horn/airbag cover? Also is it safe to spray it inside the car, even outside with all the doors open? I suppose you'd need to mask virtually everything in the front part of the interior to avoid the overspray?

    Matte would be ok since most of the steering wheel is matte.

    Plastidip has a "glossifier" spray finish that will add that finish if you prefer.

It's far from perfect, but pretty good for my first time. And MUCH better than the white. I did a little overkill with the masking but better safe than sorry. :) I included a before picture also just for reference.

    Wow! You really did it. :D Where did you get the gold emblem on the steering wheel?

    Ok, not gold, just a reflection?

    How come when I take people for a ride in my Prius, they always mention how they need to use the bathroom??! :eek: :ROFLMAO:

    Ok, who can read/write japanese and contact this site to see how we can order this stuff in the US? Really only interested in the steering wheel applique. The shifter one is reverse, so that's useless to us.
