Help, what is the trick to setting cruise control?

I have had other Toyota's before with dynamic cruise control, but it seems to be hit or miss when I try to set to darn thing. I know there is two types and to switch you hold the on button longer, and push down to set speed but it will not hold speed. Anyone have a video on how to engage?

You seem to have the basic operations, so perhaps it is slowing down to open up the distance between your car and the car in front? Perhaps the car in front is traveling slower than the set speed? Does the dashboard indicator show the cruise control on and speed set?

Even with no car in front of it, the cruise has been finicky.

    minimal set speed = ~28mph
manually adjust speed as traffic condition changes

I find myself having issues with cruise control. If I have it set for, let's say 35 MPH then the speed limit changes to 40 or 45 MPH I try to set it to the faster speed only to find out you have to disengage cruise at the previous speed (35 MPH) then reengage at the faster speed or the car will simply slow down to the 35 MPH speed instead of cruising at 40 or 45 MPH.

Mine works perfect. Set your radar cruise by hitting the radar cruise over and over until you get setting 1,2,3. When setting your cruise the on dash display shows what MPH you have (set at) selected. Toggle up or down on the cruise control lever and your speed shows what you are set at and either increasing to or decreasing.

If you are driving with cruise control at those low speeds, set your radar cruise to setting 1 which is the closest following distance to the car in front of you. I think that is why your car is slowing down. With regards to changing speeds of your cruise, you can do that on the fly by toggling up either holding it up or click by click.

Something else I would like to point out regarding radar cruise. I was following several vehicles on the freeway @ 60+MPH two cars slowed down to about 35 MPH in front of me and my radar cruise slowed me down to the same speed while keeping a safe following distance and speeding up to my pre-adjusted cruise control speed of 64MPH. If you are a bit worried/paranoid about the radar cruise working well. Set your radar cruise to setting 2 or 3. It's not quite self driving but sometimes it feels like it.

It's one of the features that sold me on a 2017 over a 2016 Prius.

What makes prime DRCC shy of tesla's TACC is that it looks to me my prime can't tell the general traffic condition other than the car right in front of mine. Sometimes when other cars at adjacent lane slow down and as a human, I know something's going on ahead. Usually I'll slow down however my prime still cruises on until the car in front of me slams its brake. Then I'll get a huge BRAKE sign at the central panel.

Agree, on all points, it's a bit different. But , I like the automatic braking.

You are in charge, Cx AB and Cruise to a stop, after all, there is only one intelligent being and it's not the AB SYSTEM.

That's not what I was saying, the radar cruise works fine for me, what I was saying speed limits change while traveling so I find myself adjusting the cruise control to keep up with the increased speed, I don't use the lever up to increase speed (but that's just my preference)

The Problem in that case seems to be CC NEEDS TO RESET again, or drive manually.. Talking to it and cursing it helps a lot too.

I had my first experience with DRCC a month ago in a rental car when I got a free upgrade to an Infiniti. While it was flawless following a car already in front of me, a couple of times a slower moving car in the next lane pulled in front of me and DRCC did not handle it correctly. Even though I could see the car moving into my lane, the CC apparently couldn't, because it maintained the same speed until the offending car was directly in front of me, but by then I was practically on top of it. I learned that the moment that you see or even anticipate that a car is about to move into your lane and that clearance may be tight to cancel the cruise and start slowing down, then resume only after they are in front of you.

Tesla1st, could it be that you may be driving in "B" instead of "D" shift position? Either cruse control will not engage in "B" position even when your cruse control is turned on.

Self driving cars are a cool concept. Until they start killing people in accidents. I think the TSS system is done correctly. It's as if some people want the cars to drive for them so they can correct them if they make mistakes and applaud them for a job well done. Whatever happened to the idea of simply driving?

Heiwa, hit the nail on the head I was always in "B" mode while trying cruise control. This is why I posted the question in the first place, I figured someone already figured this out, thanks. You would think Toyota would have a indicator screen advising "option not while in Battery Mode".

B is not battery mode. It is braking mode for use on steep downgrades. It is essentially low gear for a continuously variable transmission. In general you should not be using the B mode except on long, steep down grades.
