Ok, stand corrected. Have you found any Toyota pdf on this? Or the holy grail: 2016 Repair Manual?

Oh! Good to know, I'll pick up some glass jars for storage and use a magnet and see what happens. :D

Hehehe I wish. I looked around under there for a while for a bit and was trying to find the coolant drain plug, although I didn't find it, I think I just needed more access to the other side and I'd probably find it.

So I just slowly opened it and was going too see what came out and I got lucky and was the transmission and not the coolant.
If it had been coolant I'd just tighten back up and top off if I lost enough.

Ok, so you went "commando", lol. I notice you mention putting in 3.5 quarts, to match what you drained. With 3rd gen, getting the level right was:

With the car level, add fluid till it starts coming back out.

    I think you're good though.

Regarding 4th gen repair manual: now I have a mission...

I've had good luck with manualslib.com in the past. Maybe it's worth trying a search there for 2016 Prius Service Manual?

I would still very much like the 2017 Prius Prime service manual though. Has anyone seen one yet?

Is downloading the full manual through TechInfo that straightforward though? I hear you need to do many, many downloads, then combine them. Anyone done this before, any comment?

Also, with the car still relatively new: clandestine copies will be sparse I think.

Thanks, I did see your link. : ) I'm actually asking if someone (you perhaps?) has seen the manual, did you download from that site and was it the 800+ page detailed single PDF I would expect to see or something completely different?

The last time I did it was about 2005, so I don't know if my information is current. But it was on the order of a few dozen downloads that time.

You know what would be real nice, for any and all Toyota Repair Manuals: if Toyota would publish a freely available "light" version, with the most important DIY and basic maintenance portions, in pdf format. And maybe a paper version also, for a reasonable amount.

    This would have numerous benefits:

    1. Make Toyota look like a good guy, for a change.
    2. Force them to clean up the tome, make the basics more succinct and complete.

So is it possible to call up and order a full service manual?

They do - it's pages 574 through 635 in the Owners Manual.

It may not be as complete as you'd like, but where do you draw the line? They drew the line right before fluids. I can't blame them for that, because fluids are a whole level above in terms of safety of handling.

    OCD plain and simple.

The COLOR of what comes out means NOTHING.

But it makes some folks feel like they are doing something useful so as long as they dispose of the old oil properly and don't screw something up in the process........no harm no foul.

Yes, that is just my opinion.
But when the choice is between two radically different opinions and one is from the Engineers who build the things and the other is from some self appointed expert on the Internet........guess which one I most often trust.

It's an odd situation. For a counterpoint: Honda manages typically to put the entire Shop Manual into one paper volume, about the dimensions and page count of a city phone book. And Helminc will sell you one for about $100. They're well layed out, clearly identify the extent and scope of the various services.

Toyota OTOH, offers a four volume Repair Manual, with no explanation as to what volumes are crucial, at around $240 per volume. And Helminc makes mention of it, but is currently out-of-stock. Perhaps for good reason? Toyota documentation of the basic service items too, is NOT clearly delineated, often mooshed in with extreme disassembly detail. The brake chapter in particular is a good example.

@Lee Jay See the thread I started, regarding '58 Volkswagen (Beetle) Owner's Manual, for what used to be included. Under 100 pages too.

Oh wow! A hundred bucks for everything would not be too bad, but 4 at almost 250 a pop, that sucks :(
