the only thing you're doing wrong is reversing my question. the fan has to be on to turn a/c on, or adjust temp.
but my question again: why do estimated miles drop with just the fan, and then no subsequent drone when a/c is turned on?

yup, they added a heat pump to the traction battery in the Prime, when you want heat the heat comes from the traction battery via the heat pump. I'm assuming that A/C (refrigerated air) comes also from the traction battery.

what do you mean, they added a heat pump to the traction battery. the heat pump is electric, like the a/c compressor, no? or it might even be one unit, but why would that prevent you being able to access fresh air?

On the 2012-2015 PIP the only way you could get heat was having ICE kick in. The Prime get's it's heat from the heat pump via the traction battery

I don't know the answer to that @bisco

According to the EU manual, auto works exactly the same as in the PiP and you can get fun only (non auto) and change its level and the outlets to your preference.

    EDIT @bisco
    One improvement is the below
    :■ Blower customization
Fan speed setting during the automatic mode operation can be customized.
To change the fan speed setting mode, press Auto . Each time is pressed, the fan speed setting mode changes as follows. “NORMAL”  “ECO”  “FAST”  “NORMAL”
When “ECO” is displayed on the air conditioning screen, the air conditioning is controlled with low fuel consumption prioritized such as reducing fan speed, etc. When “FAST” is displayed on the screen, fan speed will be increased.

    Bolding is mine.

Checked for you the US online manual, it is the same as the EU one on this subject (start page 488).
Americans need fresh air as well:)

That is different in the EU because you have dual-zone automatic climate control. Your AUTO button has, in small font, "ECO/Fast". Ours doesn't. We have a separate "ECO Heat/Cool" button.

It still drops the estimated EV range by about 1.5 -2.0 miles

I was trying to stay out of you guy's discussion lol. I just wanted to clarify the differences in EU and US HVAC controls. Carry on. :)
