My latest creation to protect the doors and garage wall from smashing into each other as we enter and exit the Prius. 1497491229339.jpg 1497491243710.jpg

I'd recommend PVC rather than the heavier metal pipe.

Just another data point. And yeah, it's happened more times than I care to admit.

good one mendel. i have block foam taped to mine, but yours looks cleaner, and makes more sense.
i just lowered the door the other day with the hatch open for the bajillionth time. no more scratches, but i'm wondering when the spoiler is going to fall off.

Looking back in my car's service history, I see that the spoiler was already replaced by the PO and the replacement damaged by the PO. It got further damaged by the other "PO," aka the Present Owner or the Po'd PO.

This mod won't protect me from closing the door on myself, but at least the spoiler doesn't bang and drag on the open garage door now. And I've made a cord I can quickly attach to keep the hatch from going all the way up if I'm going to have the hatch open for a while.

PVC would sag with a 5 ft length. 10 ft of 1/2" emt only costs $2.74 at Menards.

Use schedule 80 PVC or take out the sag by pre-stressing lighter PVC with slightly offset end clamps!

maybe an alternate design could skip the pipe, fasten the foam tube directly to the wall? Maybe split, a half-round section?

what's wrong with metal pipe, will the weight cause the garage wall to collapse eventually?

    It's reducing clearance a bit.

My thought would be to use a half-round with OD same as foam tube ID, and split the foam in half. Then screw through the wood and countersink fairly aggressively into the foam with oversized washer.

That's what my original design was but it doesn't stay stuck to the wall. The glue fails or the tape dries out.
