Is there a way to turn OFF the default so the car does not go into EV mode every time you re-start the car?

no, but all you have to do is press the hv button. or if you're out of plug charge, it starts in hv.

Not clear what you mean. You can always push the HV button to put it in HV mode, but remember, even in HV mode, the car will be in "electric mode" for lower speeds, like when first starting the car (ie, backing up out of the garage, etc).

I read this somewhere and makes sense - the Prime defaults to EV because that allows Toyota to meet the requirements that the Prime is an EV vehicle, thus qualifying for the federal tax credit.

Just never plug it in. But then what’s the point of having a Prime?

Press and hold the A/C button on your remote key fob. It will lock the doors and start the HVAC system to either heat or cool to the set point you left the last time you were in the car. It'll run the heat pump or the engine as needed.

Does the car only default to EV only, or will it start in EV Auto if that was the mode it was in when shut down?
