Newby battery question - EV battery and front engine battery and nothing else?

So I know there is a front of engine battery like most cars have. And there is a lithium-ion battery pack in the back of the car. When I drive I see the battery field on the center console split into 2 parts - the top EV (electric only) battery portion that gets me between 25 miles and 30 miles. Then when that is out I have the bottom portion that I see goes down a tiny bit but recharges as I coast or break (I call that portion my hybrid battery).
So my stupid question is, is the hybrid battery that gets charged during the regenerative breaking process the same as the EV battery or is there another unique battery? My thought is that it's just another portion of the EV battery but I can't really tell.

yes, same battery. they just use the icon to show you when you have wall charge (or enough regen)
    and when you don't.
when you don't, it drives like a regular prius, retaining a similar amount of electrons in the hybrid battery as regular prius. or more, if you can go down a huge hill.

Thanks bisco. So it will drive in EV mode until a certain % of battery is left then go into "regular" hybrid mode to save the remainder of the battery for hybrid driving?

exactly. a scan gauge or other obd device will show the % of charge from full wall charge, down to hybrid charge, then fluctuating hybrid charge as you drive, and even the buffer % toyota maintains, so the battery is never really 'full' or 'empty'.

Well, if we're going there, there are four more batteries in the TPMS sensors. They last up to 10 years.

This subject comes up a lot. One of the sources of confusion, and least with the first generation PiP, was that the prototype for the PiP actually DID have separate HV and EV batteries, and people would come across web pages describing the prototype, but by the time it went to production, there was only one traction battery. The control system manages it either in HV mode, using the ICE to maintain a desired state of charge or provide motive power, or in EV mode, where it drains the battery until the state of charge gets too low, and it then switches to HV mode and operates like a regular Prius. And then displays it as if there were a separate HV and EV battery. The Prime has an additional mode, where it runs the ICE specifically to charge the battery (to I think 80% of the usual maximum).

The 12v battery. Mine will be 5 years old this month and I will run it until it strands me somewhere. If you I'm think I'm crazy @Raytheeagle has a nearly 9 year old 12v battery. He's just playing with fire. :ROFLMAO:

PS, I bring a portable jumper with me. I'm not crazy.... Sometimes...

    I'm a pyromaniac at heart:D.

I maintain our 13v battery with a BatteryMinder 1510 every so often and have a 37 mile one way commute 4-5 times a week. The 12v gets plenty of charging;).

But I've got a jump pack for the inevitable need(y).

With all the weather unrest down south, here today it was 93 and a little overcast:).

We even had a rain shower in the east bay:eek:.

I came out to the loaner car and saw water spots on it and thought: this is strange, but I'll take it(y).

If we’re listing all the batteries, don’t forget the small Inverter Battery (8598B-47010) mounted in the center console. The New Car Features book (available by subscription to techinfo.toyota.com) says it “Supplies power to the power control unit to assist with discharging high voltage components if the output of the auxiliary battery becomes insufficient after the vehicle is involved in a collision.”
