While it's happily charging, questions

Discussion in 'Prime Technical Discussion' started by Deleted member 111882, Sep 18, 2017.

  1. Maybe it's in the manual and glossed over it:

Why does L2 charging happen at 8 A (according to my ScanGauge) even when the "Charge Current" setting is set to Maximum, rather than 8 A? And why was the "Charge Current" option frayed out when I ran this test on a public L2 charger?

How do I keep the car on accessories (e.g., listen to music, run light A/C or heat) while staying in the car while it's charging? It seems to shut itself off after 2 minutes, so how do I just keep it on for longer?

You're out of luck on that one. Toyota did this also with the 2012-2015 PIP. I guess Toyota thinks running accessories is wasteful use of energy

But the preconditioning is not a waste?
When running accessories there is usually somebody inside the vehicle, unlike preconditioning.

It doesn't, unless the EVSE tells it to. I've seen it at 15.4A.

Well IDK maybe Toyota thinks nobody's going to sit in the car for 2 hours. I'm just shooting in the dark here. I really don't understand Toyota's logic here.

This is a software bug. It's supposed to last 20 minutes. I've reported it.

Geez, you'd think Toyota would allow the 12 volt battery to be trickle charged by the charging system powered by the EVSE.

Early Tesla's at least were famous for MASSIVE vampire loads killing both the 12V battery and the traction battery while the car sat unused. And the 12V battery is very hard to access making jumping really hard if that one died.

    I'm not making this up.

  17. Uh, to Toyota directly? How/If/Will they let customers know, and how to update their cars to get the 20 minutes?

I submitted it to Toyota and I have no idea if or when they will fix it.

  19. Heh, was wondering how Toyota would respond, instead of fixing the software in the car to make it go 20 minutes, they'll say "Oh that's a typo, it's supposed to say 2 minutes" o_O
