Like most USB ports, it's mostly there as an audio output. As such it will probably have a MAX ½ amp charging capacity, which will barely charge a phone, if at all, depending on the phone, the signal strength and what load it is under..

    Get a 12V charging adaptor.

I cannot speak to your issue as I have never tried to charge my phone iPhone that way.

FWIW, I charge from the cigarette lighter socket (with a very cheap USB adapter) provided for the backseat passengers. Not the one on the top of the console.

I leave the 3-foot cable in all the time; easier to find and manage than one going into the Prius USB port (which holds my flash drive with my music files).

There is also a socket up front.

    THIS.

Or if you are stubborn......take it to a dealer for a warranty visit so they can tell you the same thing.

Not true. Charges iPhone 6S just fine, and quickly. Puts out at least 1A.

    OK, sorry - I didn't realise it was a USB 3.0 port.

It was reported on a couple of posts last year that it was only a 2.0 port.

I wonder why my SAMSUNG charges very slowly if at all (I turn GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi off to get it to charge in the car).

On my Gen 4 it's a USB 2.0 port per the Owner's Manual page 452

It is USB 2, but puts out 1 amp (I've measured it). Obviously, the port doesn't follow standards.

When I had an android phone I remember having to use either a special charge cable or a change to a setting to enable higher current charging, but that was a number of years ago.

USB 2.0 specification only requires a minimum of 500 mA. It does not meet the USB 2.0 Power delivery specification, but Toyota does not claim that. There are 12 volt ports & Qi charger expected to be used for charging. The USB port is for audio & data.

Let's see......you have been a member here for over a year now.
And it hasn't sunk in yet that this IS A CONTINUING AND UNENDING PROBLEM ?????

AND that there are at least a half dozen other threads discussing it, with a couple of them currently active ????

It does nothing useful to shotgun complaints about it into other threads.

    LOL, so my wife says!

Sorry you were offended, Sam. I did post on those other threads but not sure they were reaching their target and you certainly don't seem to have read them. Maybe one of us should lighten up a bit.

I have found the site a lot lighter since I put that person on my ignore list. It sometimes makes things confusing when somebody responds to a post you do not see.
I periodically look at ignored posts but this person stays on my list for now.

Vehicle makers do not provide Qualcomm QuickCharge compliant USB ports.

Buy the appropriate certified QuickCharge adapter. Anker and Aukey are reliable products I've used.

We get complaints about this all the time.

Young people think of USB (Universal Serial Bus) as a charging standard. It was a data standard until Apple (ab)used the connector and designed a charger that was backward compatible with USB devices. The rest is history.
Older people remember RS232 & other serial standards that were replaced by USB.

I've never blocked Sam and occasionally agreed with him on some things. We can all go off at half-cock occasionally and I'm not perfect.
NB: half-cock originates from the ancient flintlock gun firing mechanism which have a misfire if the trigger was released over the short draw distance. It's nothing to do with sex or the male chicken.
