    Hello all!
I am in Houston, Texas and just bought a used 2015 Prius Two with 13,610 miles on it. There are still balances left on the Toyota warranties. I noticed, though, that the warranty periods are longer in California for 3 components including the emissions system.

The carfax vehicle history shows that the car was originally sold in Santa Monica, California and this is the first time it has been sold outside california. So can a case be made that the California warranty periods should apply?

    Many thanks

    Ram

PS: I bought the car via Carvana. Happy to share my experience (so far very good) if anyone wants to know.

IIRC in order to have the CARB warranty, the car must have been initially sold in a CARB state and last sold in a CARB state.
I am not sure whether all sales need to be in a CARB state.
Since you bought it in a non-CARB state, you do not get the longer warranty.

CARB states are California, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Maryland, Florida.

For the longer warranty, anyway, I wish Florida was a CARB state, but it's not. I see that CARB Standards in Other States - CARB | HowStuffWorks lists FL as a state having or considering CARB standards. There may be something going on in Tallahassee on that line, but I haven't heard about it.

    From greencarreports.com:
"Thirteen states—mostly in the Northeast and Northwest—and the District of Columbiahave adopted California's stricter emissions standards, many of which also participate in the zero-emission vehicle mandate.
Known as "Section 177" states, those 13 are: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington."

Thank you for the correction. My main point is CARB is now more than just California.

    just ran over this post....
wondering what kind of warranty I have: I live in New Mexico, carb state, the car got registered here first.
BUT, I bought the car new from a dealer in Atlanta (which is in a non-carb state), so what warranties do I have?

I do not show New Mexico as a CARB state, can you give me a reference?
The 2014 list of CARB States in the US | PriusChat

    Nor does Toyota's 2017 warranty
    https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms-s/T-MMS-17Prius/pdf/T-MMS-17Prius.pdf
    page 24

Toyota's warranty, as I understand it is based on two facts:
    1) It was originally purchased in a CARB state, and
    2) it is currently registered in a CARB state.

What happens in between seems not to matter.

Apparently the list I got was incorrect. Sorry.

New Mexico dropped out of CARB. See our Prius Chat CARB state listing by JimboPalmer.

    >>Toyota's CARB rules are somewhat unique, and handled case by case basis, so the correct answer is to check with Toyota as there could be exceptions we are not aware of, but-

    Toyota states -
    (1) to qualify as CARB car, the car must have been originally purchased, registered, and normally driven in a CARB state
    (2) for repair, the car must be registered and normally driven in a CARB state

So the Texas car from California has some CARB credentials, but only if the car finds its way back to a CARB state someday

As you might imagine, I try to keep up to date, so we cover as many owners as possible.

Not a personal priority for me since Virginia is non-CARB.

For my 2006, I would have assumed CARB coverage as there is some legal question if Toyota worded the older warranty guide correctly. However, at 11 years old and 165K miles, we are well on our own with orig HV battery still going strong..

Was Virginia ever CARB? Not in my (faltering) memory.

New Mexico seems to be a victim of it's legislature.

"In 2011, New Mexico delayed its Clean Cars standards for model year 2011–2016, and in 2013, repealed the program altogether, choosing instead to follow the national program."
Clean Cars Campaign - State Action

So it was enacted, but never implemented.

No but some older references showed Northern Virginia being CARB, not sure what that means as it is not true. But we do have inspections here. Prius is exempt from emissions but we have to do mechanical.

I am thinking that never happened...I have checked every warranty Toyota, FORD, GM ect, and nobody lists DC as a CARB state. And DC is a "state" in the CARB system, so if that is true, Toyota should list DC and last time I checked, no

At this point the best place to look for CARB state listing is the hybrid auto warranties, as they are now mostly up to date with Delaware being the latest addition (not full CARB).

1 Applies to California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont vehicles equipped with a California Certified Emission Control System.
2 Warranty coverage for the hybrid battery is 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
3 Applies to Delaware, Pennsylvania and Washington vehicles equipped with a California Certified Emission Control Warranty

The latter 3 states do not get the 10yr/150k on the HV Battery.

Of course if I lived in DC, I would be curious to see Toyota's policy. ToyotaTeam would not tell me answers to questions like that, saying it was case by case. Lots of unanswered questions, if you think about the possibilities. How about a PA car now in MD?
