CARB States and the model years they started being CARB states
MY 2004 California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York^, Vermont
MY 2008 Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania*
    MY 2009 New Jersey#, Oregon^, Washington*
    MY 2011 Maryland
    MY 2014 Delaware*

Former CARB States and the model years they were CARB states
MY 2005 to MY 2009 New Hampshire
    MY 2011 only Arizona

(these are my best guess, I invite corrections)

^ not all warranty provisions apply, but does include the 150,000/10 year duration (up to 2016)
    * not all warranty provisions apply, does not include the 150,000/10 year duration
    # Calendar Year, not Model Year
^^ There is no longer a 10 year/150,000 mile warranty from 2017 and beyond

Clean Cars Campaign - State Action

Note that the Prius c warranty is 8 years/100,000 miles nationwide - no CARB exception.

To me the 150000 mile CARB battery warranty is a mini-incentive to help you justify a hybrid or plug-in. Although, perhaps Prius Gen3 battery reliability is improved to the point that we don't need to worry.

    >>Could not seem to locate the on-line Toyota 2014 Prius Warranty and Maintenance guide to see any wording changes from 2013. In 2013 I noticed the Toyota wording seemed less clear than FORD and others. The one special-case often question comes up if you relocate states, how does the coverage work?

Potentially dumb question, but if you live in a non-CARB state and you move into a CARB state, will your warranty increase or is CARB applicability based strictly on where you bought and first registered the car?

That's an excellent question, and that's exactly the gray area of confusion.

There are at least two requirements for the CARB warranty to apply:
    (1) Your car must be CA-certified
...if so there should be a sticker somewhere saying something about meets CA
    (2) You car must be registered in a CARB-state at time of repair

Some people interpret Toyota puts on extra restrictions, but I prefer to go with my definition above.
Another member recently posted a letter from Toyota USA that seemed consistent with my words above.

Where (what state) did you buy yours? I'll tell you if I think you are CA-certified.

Thanks! I bought mine in Virginia (Koons Tysons). This is potentially very interesting information if I am CA-certified. Though I live in DC, I'm from MD and could see myself potentially moving back across the border (back into the states, nyuk, nyuk, nyuk) in search of cheaper rent in the next few years/if I start grad school.

^^^ ETA (the edit function never works for me): I bought my car certified in VA, but it was originally sold in NY, if that makes any difference.

Big difference, of course NY is CARB state, VA is not.
So I think your car may have a sticker saying CA certified from NY.
Thus I think it is possible, if you register in MD, you might be under CARB warranty.
Some people here say registering in non-CARB invalidates, so we need lawyer.

Hopefully you never have to replace battery and we never learn the answer.
I think it is possible my 2006 is CA-certified even though I purchased it in VA, but in general you need to purchase in a CARB state. I wonder if most PiP's to date (even in VA) are CARB certified.

Very interesting. Where would the sticker be, if I had one? Agree that hopefully I never have to learn if this all makes a difference.

There are stickers along the front edge of the engine bay, and maybe the underside of the hood. One of these will have the engine code and emission rating. Fueleconomy.gov will also give the code under environment for the car by state.

It used to be manufacturers would have a different engine code, which refers to the engine tuning and emission equipment, for CARB and Fed states. Most no longer do that. The Prius is one of those models. A 8yr/100k mile car has the same equipment as the 10yr/150k mile one. The only difference is in first state registered. Besides the car companies not wanting this way, why shouldn't the warranty be just based on where currently registered and the engine code?

    It sounds like
Toyota has a database for where each bin number is sold. If the car was sold in a carb state, and is registered in a carb state, they will provide a carb waranty. For those of us that bought in a non-carb state or are registered in a non-carb state its a federal (8 year waranty).

What if bought a federal state, and then move to a CARB state with the 10yr/150k mi warranty? The engine code is the same in either state.

There is no hint that this is the case. The letter is clear. Bought in a CARB state, currently registered in a CARB state.

The way I read Toyota letter, they say nothing about buying it in a CARB state.
They say if the Prius has "CA emissions" package and is registered in CARB state.
Admittedly, the easiest way to get "CA emissions" is to buy in a CARB state.
I am thinking they have 2 vehicle versions for sale in the USA, CARB and non-CARB.

If there were two versions, you could find two different engine codes on fueleconomy.gov. It is easy to find with the Volt.
