Do you connect this to the trunk terminal or the engine terminal? Shop manager told me today you would want to use charger in trunk terminal, but that seems like a lot of work to be used as you mentioned

Have you changed the battery in the key fob?
You say "the fob" I hope you have at least two. If not, buy a virgin fob and program it now while you can. If you lose your only fob, the repair can get complex & expensive.

Yes I did and it didn’t fix the problem. Still nonfunctional other than as a traditional remote and ignition key. It’s my only one, can’t find the other.

Can you link me to a good post on how to program a virgin fob? I presume any of those on amazon work in this capacity?

I wired a pig-tail (provided for that very purpose - it came with the charger) into the fuse-box in front, and plug in every time the car is in the garage. Here's a picture:

    - hope this helps -Wil

Battery in the fob may be dead. Have you tried replacing it?

I believe you need at least one working fob to program another.

If you do not have a working fob, I believe the dealer needs to "reseed" the immobilizer ECU in the car and then program one or more new fobs.

It shouldn't matter where you connect the charger. A little pig tail connector usually comes with a charger and that can be installed either under the hood or in the trunk. Whatever is more convenient for you is what you go with. The pigtail is about a foot long or so, so it can be routed out to a place easily accessible in the trunk, like right in the storage compartment.

Since the shop is replacing my battery and providing me a new one tomorrow, installed, from Napa auto parts, is there any benefit to using a charger throughout these cold winter months of northeastern Ohio? My drives are actually long unlike the other members here… I drive 1 to 1.5 hours each way to work every day.

My personal opinion? Install the battery and forget about it. Just like the million other cars in Ohio. It's a new battery, it shouldn't need any additional help to work correctly.

agreed, and you drive plenty to keep it charged. if you are going to leave sit it for a long time, that is a different story.

Luckily it’s a lot less than that. Prius 12V battery can only take in 1…2Amp if its temperature is below -18c or 0F. And even less when it’s colder. So theoretically if it was draining that fast you would need to drive (or keep it in ready) for something like 4 hours a day (actually lot less as battery would heat up during that).

You can clearly see the problem with charge acceptance if you try to charge cold lead acid battery with the modern “smart charger”. Many of those will just charge with constant current until the voltage reaches 14.4V and then stop. Unfortunately cold battery can’t take that much current in and then only after maybe 10 seconds of charging voltage reaches 14.4V but battery is still mostly empty. Thy do then cycle on after voltage drops enough but that just makes it very slow. It would be a lot better if charger would just keep the voltage regulated at 14.4V. Higher voltages would be even better at start of charging but only if you disconnect the battery.

For tires I like to watch the techs do their job just by looking through the window so that I see them. Discount tires has those windows instead of behind closed doors. Other than that i do everything myself with the exception of front end alignment and tire mount. Trying to DIY tires is a pain in the nice person if you don't have a tire machine.
