Is this true of the NHW11 also? What part of the system can be damaged by a vacuum refill? Does anyone have success or horror stories about a vacuum refill of either the engine or inverter coolant loop?

    Thanks,

I don't think the NHW11 has the coolant tank, but I could be wrong.

could a tear down of the inverter/converter be a possible location for clog coolant path and be setting code

would that be a activity to consider to resolve code

They have had 10 years to fix the car. I doubt your advice now will help.

Plus, the OP codes are an engine coolant loop issue. Inverter loop would be hybrid code P0A93.

okay so my own personal inquiry in the P1150 DTC clog coolant path does not qualify then

I am making inquiry into the DTC P1150 coolant loop clog blockage...... so explain further your response about the PA093 .......

DTC P1150 Coolant Heat Storage System CHS
electric pump (Toyota recall) to supply hot coolant stored in the coolant heat storage tank (thermos)CHS into cylinder head to optimize engine start (engine preheat)..... ecm controlled....

There are two individual coolant loops in your Prius, each monitored by separate ecu's. The engine coolant loop, which includes the thermos and the 3-way valve, is monitored by the engine ecu and is where the issue lies for both P1150 and P1116. The inverter coolant loop is monitored by the hybrid ecu and sets code P0A93 when there is an issue. Typically this would be because the electric water pump is faulty, but a blockage in the circuit would very likely set the same code. My point in post #25 is that the codes from the original post have nothing to do with the inverter loop and a probing of that circuit would not yield a fix for them.

    Thanks m.wynn

I am aware of the coolant loop, ecu, control valve, inverter pump, etc.

I do not have P0A93 and eliminated P1116

There are multiple threads with P1150

I consider the coolant path of inverter /converter because of the following background of hobbit techno link page

    Hobbit's techie-rants

    Prius inverter

Linking to everything hobbit's ever written doesn't do much to explain why you're considering inverter cooling when you have an engine code.

    Prius inverter

There is an image and a statement in this teardown where coolant was found not to flow

not sure he has stopped writing and this was part of my initial background search into my issue .....so to me when I was looking for coolant path flow I found that

I've read most of his write-ups over the years, they're excellent; he's very careful not to say misleading things.

If you were reading it more recently than I did, did you encounter any place where he suggested an engine cooling system code could have to do with the inverter coolant loop? If you did, can you be more specific about where he said it? I sure don't remember it....

If I ship my inverter to you could you or would you consider testing and rebuild....

Do you have some reason to suspect a problem with your inverter cooling?

If so, there is another very recent thread about exactly that, so if you have any worries about your inverter cooling, they would be completely on topic if you posted over in that thread.

Because this thread here is about the engine cooling system, and codes that pertain to the engine cooling system, it isn't the place for questions about the inverter cooling system, and mixing the two will just be confusing for future readers.

On the other hand, if you do also have an engine cooling system problem, or a P1150 which is an engine cooling system code, then your engine cooling questions would be on topic for this thread.

Correct I do currently have a 2004 Toyota Prius with P1150 code
I am able to drive vehicle for short distance currently

My initial code was P1116 ......this has been resolved

Ok. From a 2006 manual (I'm not signed in to techinfo right now to pull up a 2004), the detection conditions for P1150 are (I read this as one or the other, but they could mean both):

    • When (engine coolant preheat) water pump is on during preheat mode, coolant temperature at storage tank outlet changes by less than 2 C
    • On a warm engine, when valve is opened to storage tank, temperature at tank outlet changes by less than 3 C

There are four pages of troubleshooting instructions to help you determine why that might be happening, by systematically checking out the tank outlet temp sensor, the coolant flow control valve, the possibility of (engine, not inverter) cooling system clogging, or the ECU itself.

Going through the recommended steps will probably nail down the cause for you.

I deeply appreciate you steering me in right direction

The vehicle has not been driven for some time to my knowledge.
I have changed the coolant, control valve, inverter pump,

    Inverter appears to work fine
    engine runs well
but did see and or find in other post where DTC P1150 was a difficult detection of engine cylinder wall coolant leak down,

    thanks chap

Sounds like you're already partway into changing things out.

When I can catch somebody earlier, I always try to encourage starting with the check-out/information-gathering steps in the manual, to get more of a handle on what's really going on, before starting in with swapping parts. Sometimes you get lucky and the part swap solves the problem, but if you don't, you've just turned it into a slightly different problem, where some of the observations you originally had may or may not still apply, and might have to be reassessed.

But anyway, if the car's still saying P1150, then it still thinks it doesn't see enough temperature change at the tank outlet when there should be coolant pumping in or out of it, so there's just a matter of thinking "what sorts of conditions could cause that?", and then, for each of those, "how could I check whether it's that?", ideally with the help of the manual.
